Wannsee is a lake and beach on the river Havel near Berlin. Lake "Greater Wannsee"

In the Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf is located Lake Wannsee, which is also called the Big Wannsee, since there is also a Small Wannsee, which is part of the Gribnitsky Canal. The Greater Wannsee is a large section of the river Havel.

River buses run along the Wannsee lake, so everyone can take a water trip to Potsdam, Werder or to the Tegel region. Not far from the Wannseebrücke railway station and the bridge of the same name, there is a pier where they moor. In addition, a ferry arrives at the pier, which goes from Kladovo.

In the northern part of the eastern shore of the Wannsee, there is a beach, which is part of the Nikolassee district. Previously, this area was a favorite vacation spot for residents of West Berlin. The beach building located there is an architectural monument; in addition, there is a special area for nudists.

The reservoirs of the Big Wannsee, Lake Gribnitsky, Gribnitsky Canal, Glienicke Lake and the Havel River encircle the Wannsee administrative region from all sides. Thus, this area is a river island, which is located to the west of the Greater Wannsee. There are two more islands nearby, Schwanenwerder to the north and Pfaueninsel to the west.

This area is of great historical importance. At the beginning of the new year 1942, in a villa located on the western shore of Lake Wannsee, high-ranking representatives of the imperial departments of the Third Reich and the NSDAP held a secret meeting, at which questions were raised about the possibility and implementation of plans for the extermination of the Jewish population of Europe.

This meeting was later called the Wannsee Conference. Today, the Villa Marlir, where it was held, houses the Holocaust Memorial Center.

Good afternoon, dear readers! Lake Wannsee is very close to Berlin, only 20 minutes by train or car. Why not come here on the weekend? In summer you can swim, it is clean river water. And yet, the local beach is officially recognized as the longest in Europe.

The picturesque view, the beach, clean air and sights - all this attracts both tourists and Berliners.

The lake is easily accessible from Berlin and Potsdam. There is a bike route. A good walk is guaranteed.

Lake Wannsee is one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe. When the water is cold and weather not allowed to swim - you can just walk along the shore.

In summer, you can swim here, sunbathe on the beach and relax in cute little cafes. So, if you are tired of the city and its "European" rhythm, then pack your beach bag and go to nature.

If you are in Berlin for a few days, take the train to Nikolassee. This is one of the districts of the administrative district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf.

Near Wannsee there are several significant memorial sites. And one of the villas, the infamous Villa Marlir, even became in 1942 the venue for a secret conference of departments of the Third Reich.

Lake Wannsee

By the way, what lake Wannsee are we talking about? There are two of them right here. There is a Greater Wannsee. This is a lake formed by the expansion of the river Havel. And there is another one, guess for yourself what it is called.

Yes, just Little Wannsee. It is part of the Berlin Gribnitsky Canal. Agree, the name of the channel is somehow not German at all. In German it sounds like Griebnitzkanal.

In general, Berlin is called the city of canals. Channels - connection with the Baltic Sea. The total length of the navigable canal Berlin - the Baltic Sea - is 150 kilometers.

The lake is located in the Wannsee area of the same name, which is an island. You can get to it in different ways, including 5 bridges. Since it is an island, it is surrounded by water on all sides. This is the Havel River itself, then our current destination is the Great Wannsee, the Gribnitz Canal, here is the artificial Gribnitz Lake (Griebnitzsee), and another Glienik Lake.

The longest beach in Europe

Of all the European lake beaches, this one is the longest. On the Great Wannsee lake, 1200 meters are reserved for a recreation area. It has excellent clean water (plus, neat Germans clean it regularly), Sandy shore and nothing blocks the sun for you.

The beach belongs to the Nikolassee area, not Wannsee. Even before it fell, the beach was chosen by nudists. Today there is a small area allocated for them, but to lie on the other beaches, you will certainly need a swimsuit.

The beach is well equipped, a huge number of cabanas, toilets, showers. The place is very popular. In the summer, whole families come here to relax.

For vacationers created maximum comfort. There are several nearby good restaurants, bars, eateries.

Many come for a run along the lake. By the way, even in winter, some people manage to swim here. German connoisseurs of a healthy lifestyle and "walruses" gather here to plunge into ice water and rubbed with snow, of course.

River trams run along the Havel and the Gribnitsky Canal. You can ride them, or even drive to Potsdam and the area.

What to see around the lake

If we move a little away from the beach, pass houses with attics, then we will come to the Glinnik bridge. You may have heard of it, its second name is Spy Bridge. Here many times the Soviet and American intelligence services carried out the exchange of captured intelligence officers.

There is also Pfaueninsel, or simply "peacock island", where you can really meet peacocks, a lot of peacocks.

This island was acquired by King Friedrich Wilhelm II, who also ordered the creation of a menagerie. But, things did not go beyond the peacocks. The island is quite small, you can get to it by ferry from the beach.

Peacocks have chosen branches of trees, walk on the ground and are not afraid of tourists. Although, we do not recommend coming close to this majestic bird, it may even peck.

And there is also the white Pfaueninsel castle of the same name.

Secret Conference at Lake Wanzee

The phrase "secret conference" smacks of a conspiracy scenario. So it was. One of the worst conspiracies ever modern history humanity was drawn up here.

The Wannsee Conference was held on the shores of this peaceful lake in 1942. World War II is already in full swing, what else could be so terrible planned? History buffs already know what I'm talking about.

January 20, 1942, Villa Marlir. The conference was attended by representatives of various departments of the Third Reich, as well as members of the NSDAP.

They discussed in detail the topic of destruction in Europe. More precisely, a plan was drawn up for the "final solution of the Jewish question."

Reinhard Heydrich was appointed responsible for the implementation of the plan.

It is clear that the meeting was very secret. To everyone who was supposed to be present at Villa Marlir, Heydrich himself sent out invitations by secret mail.

The guests were invited to arrive at a picturesque, very cozy villa.

Breakfast was served by 9:00. Then, some of the guests decided to admire the lake.
At 12:00 this terrible discussion began.

Today, the famous Holocaust Remembrance Center is located here. Villa Marlir has become a museum.

As for the lake, you can get here from Berlin by bike. The island also has bike paths.

Beach opening hours

The beach is open from April to September.

Wannsee on the map

Friends! Thank you for taking the time to our blog. We hope you enjoy our articles. Read more, share with your friends on social networks. We are still on Facebook "e and in In contact with.

First, we took the train directly to the town of Wannsee. Very nice place with lots of lakes. It literally attracts many vacationers and tourists both from Berlin itself and from neighboring regions.

Our yacht was on the Großer Wannsee lake, which is actually an extended section of the Havel riverbed (a tributary of the Elbe). On it, we sailed on to Potsdam.

My two captains
The Havel River, the Great Wannzi, the Gribnitsky Canal, the Gribnitsky Lake (German: Griebnitzsee) and the Glienicke Lake (German: Glienicker Lake) surround the administrative district of Wannzi, which is a river island located to the west of the Great Wannzi. To the north of the Havel is the island of Schwanenwerder, and to the west about a kilometer upstream of the Havel is the island of Pfaueninsel.

Wanzi Beach is located in the northern part of the eastern shore and is part of the Nicolaszi area. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this picturesque shore with a wide-spread beach building, which is an architectural monument, and a specially designated area for nudists, was a favorite vacation spot for residents of West Berlin.

Schwanenweerder Island

"Swan Island" (Schwanenwerder) - located on the river Havel at the edge of Lake Groser-Wanzi. A bridge connects the island to the coast.

Schwanenwerder is almost completely built up with villas and mansions, access to the coast is closed. Schwanenwerder is a prestigious residence in Berlin. Here lived, in particular, Joseph Goebbels, Albert Speer, Ernst Udet, Theo Morell and Axel Springer. Living on the island, formerly called "sandy" (German: Sandwerder), since the time of the Kaiser, testified to the high position of its inhabitants in society.

Now the island houses a youth rest home, a children's boarding house, a tent site and a post of the Berlin water police. The site of the demolished Goebbels villa is currently occupied by the building of the Aspen Institute. The Goebbels bunker is available for inspection by prior arrangement.

A copy of the mini-frigate "Royal Louise" (1999), donated in 1832 by the British royal house to the Prussian monarch Friedrich Wilhelm III, lives near the island.

Peacock Island (Berlin)

Peacock Island (Pfaueninsel) so named because of the peacocks introduced in 1795, it is located on Lake Havel to the east of Berlin. The island, which can only be reached by boat, was the favorite retreat of the Prussian kings. Following the fashion of the time for rural, simple buildings, King Frederick II erected an artificially destroyed castle on the island. His son Friedrich Wilhelm III continued construction by commissioning Peter Joseph Lenne to redesign the island as a landscape park, using the Jardin des Plantes park in Paris as a model.

In addition to redistributing the outlines of the wooded area, creating clearings, pastures and a spacious, all-encompassing network of paths, Lenne added many rare plant species. He wanted to create an idyllic look as a vacation spot for the royal family. Several buildings, such as a dairy farm built in the style of neo-gothic ruins with cows and playgrounds for the children of the royal family, completely completed the look.

These structures were gradually added in the form of the Palm Greenhouse built by Schinkel in 1830-31, which later burned to the ground, and a menagerie for exotic animals, which was then moved by Friedrich Wilhelm IV and thus laid the foundation for the now famous Berlin Zoo (Berlin's Tiergarten). Currently, the Peacock Island Garden, a park, many buildings have been completely restored, restoring the atmosphere of a 19th century island of relaxation to the subtleties.

A ferry regularly connects the island to the main land. In 1990, the entire island with the castle, garden and park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Royal Farm is located on the island. It was built on the initiative of the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm II. On the farm, members of the royal family worked "occupational therapy"- they milked cows, churned butter, cared for pigs and horses. And the building of the restaurant is a Bavarian-style hunting lodge built in 1840 by order of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV.

Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Nikolskoye is Protestant and is located in the Glienicke park. Today it is part of the Evangelical Church Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia. The church has a Russian Orthodox profile, with a notable difference - it has only one dome, instead of five, as is customary in Russia.
King Friedrich Wilhelm III built the church on August 13, 1837. His daughter Charlotte (after her marriage, Alexandra Feodorovna) was married to Tsar Nicholas I.
Here is the tomb of Prince Charles of Prussia.

Heilandskirche am Port von Sacrow
Heilandskirche am Port von Sacrow located in Park Sacrow on the shore of the Jungfernsee lake, which is part of that river Havel on which we sail. The park was designed and expanded in 1840 landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenne.

Church with a detached bell tower and manor have been restored in the 1990s.

Meierei im Neuen Garten
Royal Dairy Farm (Meierei), which began its work in 1792, was then abandoned, apparently due to the close proximity to the border of the GDR and West Berlin, and restored today, which now houses a small brewery and a restaurant.
The Grotto stands nearby for almost 30 years The Grotto stood in a closed border zone, and it seems that the restorers have not yet got their hands on this small building with three halls inlaid with shells.

And in the background in this photo is the Tsetsilienhof Palace

Cecilienhof
Cecilienhof Palace(German: Cecilienhof) is located in the northern part of Potsdam's New Garden, near the Jungfernsee lake. The last residence of the Hohenzollerns was built by Wilhelm II for his son Crown Prince Wilhelm and his wife Cecilia (from the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin). The building in the English country style was erected in 1914-1917 according to the design of the architect Paul Schulze-Naumburg.

Cecilienhof gained world fame by becoming the venue of the Potsdam Conference in 1945. It was while at the Cecilienhof conference that Truman gave the order over the telephone to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

I also succeeded in this palace.

On the right side of the bridge, which connects Berlin and Potsdam, is the Potsdam district Berliner Vorstadt, the so-called "Berlin suburb". It represents a long narrow "corridor", the short side of which adjoins the central part of the city, and the rest of the area is surrounded by lakes formed by the river Havel.

Hans Otto Opera House(Hans-Otto-Theater) is located on the shore of the lake Tiefer See (Deep Lake), in the cultural and commercial complex Schiffbauergasse. The oldest theater Potsdam now uses the latest technology: a platform with spectators smoothly rises and falls, many venues can envy its lighting capabilities, and a huge hall can accommodate about 500 people. Also in the building of the theater there is a restaurant, a circus platform, and stunning views of the Babelsberg park open from the upper floors.
The Hans Otto Theater has existed in Potsdam since 1795. After the Second World War, the old building in which it used to be located was destroyed, for a long time the theater moved from place to place, until such a miracle was built for it in 2006.

Potsdam Palace(Potdamer Stadtschloss) - the winter residence of the Prussian kings and German emperors, located in the center of Potsdam. The palace was built in 1662-1669 and extensively rebuilt in 1744-1752.

In April 1945, it was destroyed during the bombing of the city by the allies and then demolished by order of the GDR authorities in 1959. At that time, only the building of the stables survived.
In 1991, a cinema began to be built on the site of the palace, but the work was curtailed.
In 2002, the Gate of Fortune was rebuilt.
A full-scale reconstruction of the Potsdam Palace was carried out only in 2010-2014, and the Landtag of Brandenburg currently sits here.
.

Pumping station (Pumpenhaus) - was built in 1841 - 1843 according to the project of Ludwig Persius and served as a pump for supplying water to fountains in the park. The building is made in oriental style and is a Turkish mosque in architecture.

Cafe-restaurant Seerose
Cafe-restaurant "Kuvshinka" was built in 1983 and there have always been cafes, restaurants and bars. Due to the unusual shape, this building attracts attention, I was even a little upset that this is all just a restaurant.

On the way back, it was already completely dark and I kept asking my captains how to navigate in the dark on a smooth, empty surface of the water. In fact, this was my first trip on a yacht in my life - the sensations are simply unimaginable!

Lake Eten is located in national park Muritz in Roggentin, Germany. The first mention of it dates back to 1258. The name of the reservoir is translated from Old Slavonic as "dam". The lake is divided by the island of Schulzenwerden into 2 large basins. Its western part has an elongated thin shape, it is also divided into smaller basins. The eastern basin is wider than the western one.

The size of the lake is 2000 by 1700 meters. The Havel River flows into the lake from the east. The local coast is quite swampy, not planted with forest. Eten Pond is popular with kayak enthusiasts.

Lake Kleiner Wannsee

We say Berlin, we mean beautiful nature. In the capital of Germany, there are more than two hundred and fifty landscape gardening complexes, almost a fifth of the territory is covered with forest. Lake Müggelsee for residents of the eastern part of Berlin is a very popular place for leisure and recreation. In 1961, the Müggelturm tower was built on the Small Müggelsee, from which you can observe not only the insanely beautiful lake and the forests adjacent to it, but also the silhouettes of the skyscrapers of Berlin.

And yet, on Lake Tegel is located a large number of islands with villas and garden plots. It is also worth trying the famous local trout cooked according to an old recipe in the famous fish restaurant with 300 years of history.
