Sandy beaches of Georgia. Review of sea resorts in Georgia. Cape Verde Beach

The joint Black Sea coast of Georgia and Abkhazia stretches for 315 kilometers. Summers here are very warm, and the climate allows the swimming season to last 5-7 months. As for treatment local climate, then it is generally here all year round. Therefore, on the eve of the next summer, it is useful to study the TOP of the best seaside resorts in Georgia.

1. Batumi

This is the most important Georgian resort city, where you can enjoy the clear sea and sun, as well as sightseeing and shopping in numerous shops. As for the attractions, there are many of them here: ancient cathedrals and modern singing fountains, the famous Botanical Garden, Argo cable car, embankment, Neptune Square and other objects.
Batumi is one of the most expensive cities in Georgia, but even here you can find places that are no more expensive than in Tbilisi. An inexpensive way to fill your stomach is to buy local, hearty and delicious national pastries - khachapuri (cheese flatbreads, sometimes with eggs), you can buy them on every corner here.
The disadvantages include too high prices, pebble beaches that not everyone likes, and the sea that is not very clean during the high season. But the purity of the city itself, numerous restaurants, offering Georgian cuisine, unique architecture, despite all the shortcomings, attract a huge number of vacationers to Batumi every year. This resort is chosen for family vacation, since there is all the infrastructure and a variety of entertainment for him here. Young amateurs also come here active rest.

2. Cape Verde

Mtsvane-Kontskhi or Cape Verde is one of the most beautiful black sea resorts Georgia, located 9 kilometers from Batumi. It has long become a popular holiday destination, where both locals and tourists want to go.
This cape was called green because it is covered with lush greenery all year round. The local subtropical climate is characterized by warmth and plenty of moisture, so tropical plants grow wild here. The botanical garden spreads over 120 hectares, and its collection includes up to 5,000 plant species, half of which are trees and shrubs. 104 plant species are endemic to the Caucasus. Japanese sakura and blue eucalyptus, bamboo and cacti, giant spruce and palm trees coexist here. The warm climate is conducive to sunbathing and treatment of respiratory system ailments.
This place began to be improved at the end of the 19th century - a world-famous botanical garden was laid out on the picturesque slopes of Cape Verde, which receives many thousands of visitors every year. The coastal strip of Cape Verde is especially picturesque. The local small-pebble beaches have both regular beachgoers and lovers of windsurfing and scuba diving. Extreme supporters retire to wild beaches among the rocks.

3. Kobuleti

Kobuleti, a resort located in the Colchis Lowland, is considered the pearl of Adjara. There is a unique microclimate here, different from the seaside. Here you can not only enjoy the beautiful scenery, sunbathe on a beach with clean pebbles and breathe in the fresh sea breeze, but also improve your health.
Kobuleti is located 20 kilometers from Batumi, its resort area stretches along the Black Sea for more than 10 kilometers. The climate here is very mild, subtropical, and pine groves perfectly ionize the air, warm sea and hot sun - everything you need for first-class relaxation and improved health.
Like everywhere else in Georgia, Kobuleti has municipal beaches, so they are well-groomed and clean. The clear sea and small pebbles allow you to enjoy a beach holiday, and the black iron-rich sands have natural healing properties.
As for various types of treatment, in Kobuleti they treat with sea air, sea water and thalassotherapy. Scientists have found that sea water a quarter more effective than fresh in increasing skin performance.
People who love silence, simplicity and need to improve their health, who do not like the overly crowded beaches of Ureki, prefer to come to Kobuleti to relax.

4. Gonio

Tourists come to Gonio not only to swim in the clear sea and climb the mountain slopes, but also to look at the eucalyptus grove located along the road, which spreads healing aromas around the area. The local beaches, as elsewhere in the vicinity of Batumi, have large pebbles. Those who are tired of the eternal city noise and want to have only one entertainment in the form of the sea prefer to relax here. There are small cafes here, and you can rent beach umbrellas and sun loungers. And when the sea gets boring, you can go to Batumi by minibus (half an hour’s drive) or go up to the Gonio-Apsaros fortress, which is surrounded by an aura of myths and legends. Here is the grave in which the Apostle Matthew, whose gospel was included in the Bible, is believed to be buried.

5. Kvariati

Thanks to its excellent location and the combination of sea air with mountain resort Kvariati has become one of the favorites on the Black Sea coast. There is very clean sea water here, which attracts numerous vacationers. This place is located 14 kilometers south of Batumi, very close to the Turkish border. Here, a clean pebble beach stretches for a kilometer. The sea here is deep, which attracts divers who enjoy exploring the local underwater world. Here, therefore, at the end of the beach, near the rocks, the only scuba diving center in all of Georgia is organized, where you can get instructions, dive with fins and a mask and explore different routes, for example, to a sunken ship.
But in Kvariati you can not only have fun and relax, here, as in other resorts in Adjara, you can treat vascular, gynecological and central diseases nervous system.

6. Ureki

Ureki is considered a very good climatic resort. It is located 50 kilometers north of Batumi, in the Ozurgeti region. The proximity to the warm sea gave this area a humid subtropical climate.
The local coastline is a strip of eucalyptus and pine groves that add a subtle, magnificent healing aroma to the sea breeze. The Ureki resort is a unique place for treatment and active recreation thanks to the generous local nature, which gave it not only sea and sun, but also velvety fine sand. The uniqueness of Ureki is the presence of a sandy beach, and the sand here is not ordinary, but with magnetite (the so-called “magnetic sands”). According to experts, local magnetic sands strengthen the nervous system and musculoskeletal system, so it is not surprising that people with similar problems come here.
The healing properties of magnetic sands were already known in ancient times - the ancient Egyptians, Hellenes and Indian yogis treated them with them. Modern medicine has mastered a separate physiotherapeutic method of treatment - magnetic therapy. On the Black Sea coast such sands are found in Bulgaria and Georgia. Georgian sands usually contain 2-3% magnetite, but there are places where layers in the upper layers contain up to 70% of it. In Bulgaria, magnetic sand placers are wider than those in the Caucasus, but they have a lower magnetite content. Therefore, Georgian black magnetic sands can be called a unique phenomenon.

7. Grigoleti

In the southwest of the Colchis Lowland there is one of the most popular Black Sea resorts in Georgia, Grigoleti. It is sandwiched between the waters of the Black Sea and the beautiful Caucasian peaks. For the most part, the local coastline is covered with pine groves. Grigoleti beach also has magnetic sand, which has a healing effect for rheumatic and joint diseases. Not far from here is Lake Grigoleti. According to ancient Greek mythology, Queen Medea lived here and the Golden Fleece was located.

8. Anaklia

In western Georgia there is the climatic resort of Anaklia with a clear sea, sandy beach and dry climate. The coastline here stretches for 8 kilometers, and the resort itself is located 147 kilometers north of Batumi. This resort is still very young and therefore is rapidly developing. When a yacht club and the first high-class hotel opened here in 2011, Anaklia was given the status of a city. For the construction of the resort, the Georgian authorities attracted the architect from Spain Alberto Domingo, who adjusted the coastline to build an embankment and laid out an extensive amusement park here. In addition, he also built the longest pedestrian bridge in Europe, 540 meters long, to the village of Ganmukhuri, which is located on opposite bank Inguri River.
Currently, the construction of modern tourist facilities and hotels continues on the coast. A free industrial zone and a deep-sea port should appear here, which should contribute to the prosperity of the region not only in tourism, but also in economic terms.

9. Chakvi

The small and green resort of Chakvi is located on the coast of Adjara, from here 17 kilometers to Batumi. There is a pebble beach, and sand with small shells is found only at the very coastline.
The name of the resort is associated with a culture such as tea, which has been grown here for quite a long time. It is no coincidence that Chakvi is called the capital of Georgian tea. Tea plantations here occupy a fairly large area. In addition to tea, Japanese tangerines are grown here, and there are also bamboo thickets.
Those tourists who want to relax in “savage” tents at sea in Georgia, but don’t know the best place to do this, can safely head to Chakvi. After all, there are many places where you can put up tents without going far from the sea, since the area here is quite wild. But here, accordingly, there are few places where you can go to have fun. The only attraction is the house of the Chinese Lau Jan Jau - the man who first started growing tea here. He lived here in the first quarter of the last century, and now his house is completely abandoned and is not guarded by anyone. As is already clear, here you can find a calm and measured holiday; different groups of tourists can afford to settle at a considerable distance from each other, so this is a paradise for lovers of silence. It’s especially convenient to come here by car; you can also bring your children. Food and shelter in Chakvi, which is not spoiled by “cool” vacationers, are very affordable - at the height of the season, two people here can live on 5,000 rubles a day.

We have an established stereotype that Georgian cuisine consists entirely of meat - satsivi, shish kebab, kharcho. But in fact, its basis is...

10. Sarpi

The beach of this place is considered the cleanest on the entire Georgian Black Sea coast. From this small Adjara town, Batumi is only 20 kilometers away, so people come here on weekends in the summer from neighboring cities of Adjara, including from Batumi itself. The beach here is not very long - only 500 meters, but it is wide - 100 meters, which is convenient. It is covered, like most Adjarian beaches, with pebbles. The stormy Chorokhi River coming down from the mountains near Batumi is the culprit for the turbidity of the sea water there, but in the Sarpi area there is a sea current from the south, which makes the water near Sarpi beach especially clean. In summer, the water has time to warm up well, remaining clean throughout the entire swimming season. Young people are very fond of jumping into the water from a cliff. Divers often visit here as there is a diving center here.
An interstate highway runs between the beach and the residential part of the village of Sarpi. The Georgian-Turkish border is very close, or rather, it literally divides the village into two parts, so the beach on one side abuts the checkpoint.
Sarpi can be called a quiet town; it is more conducive to a relaxed beach holiday, quiet contemplation of waterfalls and mountain landscapes. There are very beautiful sunrises and sunsets here. Additional comfort can be considered the presence of sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach. But there is no smell of club life here, and all the fuss is connected only with the presence of a border.

Mostly pebble. The sea here is relatively clean and the water is quite warm. The number of people on the beaches is not very large even at peak times tourist season— there are always free places.

Of the minuses beach holiday in Batumi, I would like to note the coarse pebble bottom - going into the water and lying on towels is quite inconvenient; many tourists swim in special shoes and rent sun loungers for 3 lari GEORGIAN GEL RATE:
3 lari = 0.99 euro;
3 lari = 1.14 dollars;
3 lari = 75.66 rubles;
3 lari = 31.92 hryvnia;
3 lari = 2.55 Belarusian rubles.
in a day.

In terms of shopping, there are many shops in Batumi, but it’s difficult to find really interesting things. We would recommend starting with the store - it seemed to us optimal in terms of price and quality ratio.

Interesting: detailed article about prices in Batumi: how much food and souvenirs cost

For tourists interested, Batumi has something to see. The city itself is very modern and beautiful. You can spend 2-3 days just examining it.

First of all, I would like to highlight:, Piazza, local, Batumi embankment, and Argonauts Square.

It would be a good idea to visit the attractions near Batumi. For budget travelers, I would like to recommend first and foremost.

Kobuleti - an option for independent holidays

In this panorama you can simultaneously see the beach, modern hotels in Ureki, and typical housing in the private sector. Try rotating it with your mouse.

Important Note

Ureki is primarily a health resort for people with serious musculoskeletal disorders. Especially a lot of young children are brought here.

Many tourists will not be comfortable relaxing and seeing seriously ill children.

Since Ureki is more of a health resort, prices for housing and food here will be higher than in other “village” types. If treatment is not the purpose of the trip, we recommend choosing any other resort.

Gonio and Kvariati - live with sea and mountain views

The villages of Gonio and Kvariati are located south of Batumi. These resorts have a common beach and in essence they are not much different. The sea here is noticeably cleaner than in Batumi. The mountains approach almost the sea itself, and therefore there are a lot of beautiful views in the surrounding area. The resort is suitable exclusively for a relaxing holiday close to nature.

If you are vacationing in Gonio or Kvariati, be sure to visit the Gonia Fortress. A ticket costs only 3 GEL, but you will be left with a lot of impressions.

Attractions: nearby is , and .

They write on the Internet that Gonio and Kvariati are elite resorts in Georgia. Indeed, prices for housing and food here are noticeably higher (30-50%) than in Batumi, but this is where all the elitism of the resort ends. The infrastructure here is weak, there is not much to do. The only saving grace is the minibuses, which go to Batumi every 10 minutes and cost 80 tetri GEORGIAN GEL RATE:
0.8 lari = 0.26 euros;
0.8 lari = 0.3 dollars;
0.8 lari = 20.18 rubles;
0.8 lari = 8.51 hryvnia;
0.8 lari = 0.68 Belarusian rubles.
Exchange rates and prices may not be accurate.. A taxi will cost approx. 10 lari GEORGIAN GEL RATE:
10 lari = 3.31 euros;
10 lari = 3.8 dollars;
10 lari = 252.2 rubles;
10 lari = 106.4 hryvnia;
10 lari = 8.5 Belarusian rubles.
Exchange rates and prices may not be accurate., if you bargain.

If you still plan to come here, book your accommodation in advance: prices in Gonio and prices in Kvariati. During the season, finding decent accommodation in the private sector or booking a good hotel locally is very difficult. In spring or autumn there are no problems with this, but the resort seems to “fall asleep” - it becomes boring already on the 2-3rd day of rest.

If you book accommodation in the private sector - beware of deception. Very often low prices They rent out housing in poor condition and on the mountain, half an hour walk from the beach. It's easy to go down, but not so much to go up in the heat. Wherein beautiful photos will not protect you in any way from scammers - they take them from the Internet or take photographs of other people’s homes. When you come on vacation during the peak season, there will be no other accommodation, and the owner will say “well, what did you want for that money?”

The only diving center in Georgia is located on the territory of Kvariati.

Sarpi is a resort on the very border with Turkey

The beaches in the village are also very ordinary, albeit with black sand. Quite a lot of garbage, but the water is clean and warm.

Map of Georgian sea resorts

For your convenience, we have marked all the main seaside resorts of Georgia on the map.

You can talk about Georgia endlessly, and there will still be a lot left unsaid. It is perhaps difficult to find another place in the world where so many interesting things are concentrated in a relatively small area. Until recently, this territory was part of the USSR and, thus, was not “foreign” for all of us, but at the same time it always remained original. If you have never visited this beautiful country, have not gotten acquainted with its traditions and have not appreciated the beauty and grandeur of the local nature, history, culture and people - it’s time to correct this mistake!

Attractive at any time of the year

In general this is true. There is always a lot of sun in Georgia, and the local color and Caucasian hospitality certainly do not depend on the time of year. The peculiarity of this amazing country is that there is something attractive for any tourist.

Gourmets will be attracted by the spicy Georgian cuisine, wine connoisseurs will be attracted by the famous local drinks, for those who want to improve their health, the Tskaltubo sanatorium with healing radon springs will open its doors, and this is not to mention the warm sea in summer and ski holidays in winter. And Georgia is also a unique history and culture, soulful songs and fiery dances, the authenticity of a proud unconquered people and much, much more.

The natives call their country “Sakartvelo”. This name goes back to the first millennium BC and consists of three words: “sa” meaning “I”, “kart” - “land, territory”, “vela” - “enter, penetrate”.

Georgia, Sakartvelo, Georgia (in English - Georgia). All these are different names for the same land, and each has its own origin and its own secrets. In order to understand them and understand why the same country is called differently, you need to learn its history.

Where is

Where Georgia is located is probably known to everyone who is at least a little familiar with geography or was simply born in the Soviet Union. Of course, in the Caucasus! To be more precise, in the South Caucasus (also called Transcaucasia). The peculiarity of this territory is that it is located on the border of Europe and Asia, thus absorbing the traditions and mentality of two civilizations, two cultures.

From the west, Georgia is washed by the waters of the Black Sea, among the border states are Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Armenia.

Georgia is a predominantly mountainous country: high plateaus, mountain ranges and ridges occupy more than 80% of the state's territory in both the northern and southern parts. The flat part is represented by the Black Sea coast, as well as lowlands - Alazani, Kura, Lower Kartli, Colchis.

The famous “golden fleece”, after which the Argonauts led by Jason sailed, was located precisely on the territory of modern Georgia (the ancient Greek name of this territory - Colchis - is still preserved in geographical names relief). There is a version that Caucasians extracted gold from rivers with the help of rams: the animal was lowered into boiling water and waited for particles of golden sand to settle on thick wool. Such fur was subsequently sold as precious.

The area of modern Georgia is 69,700 square meters. km, in terms of territory size it ranks 118th out of 193 countries in the world.

How to get there from Moscow

You can get from Moscow to Georgia in different ways - by plane, train, bus or car. It all depends on the budget, as well as on the planned trip plan and goals (beach vacation, treatment, excursions, etc.).

The fastest transport is, of course, an airplane. Moreover, there is a large field for choosing the final destination. For example, if you are just going to swim in the Black Sea, there is no point in choosing transport to Tbilisi, you are better off flying directly to Batumi - this city is located directly on the coast.

In addition to Tbilisi and Batumi, you can also fly directly from Moscow to Kutaisi - this airport is suitable, for example, for those heading to Borjomi. You can also fly here when heading to Gudauri, the famous ski resort. Geographically, it is located closer to Tbilisi, but the flight can be cheaper.

If you set yourself the task of flying for the minimum price, you can choose various options with transfers, but from low-cost carriers (for example, the inexpensive Hungarian carrier Wizz Air from Vilnius to Kutaisi you can choose a flight for just a couple of tens of dollars in both end, while a direct flight from Moscow to Tbilisi will cost at least an order of magnitude more).

If you are not afraid of long and tiring journeys, but want to seriously save money, choose a bus. Direct transportation from Moscow to Tbilisi is carried out daily, but you will have to spend more than a day on the road (about 38 hours). The cost of a one-way ticket is from 3 thousand rubles, but you can try to save money by buying a bus ticket to Yerevan. These buses usually go through Tbilisi, and the journey is cheaper.

There is no direct train from Moscow to Georgia, but you can choose a route with a transfer: the easiest way to do this is through Baku or Vladikavkaz.

Finally, go to Georgia in your own car if you:

  • experienced driver and love auto tourism;
  • you prefer not to depend on anyone and not cooperate with anyone when traveling;
  • want to explore the whole country in the shortest possible time, looking at the least “promoted” places;
  • you are traveling in a small group of 3-4 people.

Climate and weather of Georgia

The Georgian climate definitely facilitates travel in this rich and most interesting country. However, if you set yourself the goal of getting to know local attractions, it is better to choose mild months - the end of spring or the beginning of autumn, since in July and August the temperature in the mainland of the country sometimes reaches +40° C, which is not conducive to active jogging.

Closer to the cold weather, you are more likely to get wet in the cool rain, but prices in the “low season” compare favorably with those in summer. In general, if you prepare well and dress correctly, Georgia, as already mentioned, is good in any season.

Let's say more - the varied topography of Georgia, the combination of mountain ranges and lowlands, as well as the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea with its semi-humid climate make the weather in this region varied and heterogeneous.

The uniqueness of Sakartvelo’s climate lies in the fact that in certain cases the country allows tourists, like the stepdaughter from the fairy tale about the twelve months, to observe all four seasons of the year literally within a couple of days: when there is a dense layer of snow on the high mountain peaks, just below the mountains are covered with thick fog, and cold rain is pouring from the sky, young grass is breaking through on the plains and flowers are blooming, and on the coast the sun is shining, oranges are filling with juice and happy people are swimming.

On the land

The Caucasus Mountains serve as protection for Georgia from cold weather. northern winds. Bending around the territory on both sides, these air masses penetrate here from the sea, heating up significantly on their way. This natural barrier means that the average air temperature in Georgia is much higher than in other countries at the same latitude.

At the same time, much more rain falls in the western part than in the eastern part, which is also explained by the influence of the sea on this region, which fills the air masses with moisture.

If in the west of Georgia a maritime subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters prevails, then far from the sea it is sharply continental, that is, it is very hot here in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, as in any mountainous country, the climate of Georgia directly depends on the altitude of the territory above sea level. The subtropics in the lowlands give way to a moderately warm climate at an altitude of up to 1,000 meters, above that there is a moderately cold climate, and after 2,000 meters above sea level - even an alpine climate: there is practically no summer in these areas, snow lies in a dense layer all year round.

In the Alazani Valley in January, the temperature rarely drops below zero, and in the summer it does not rise above +25° C; temperatures are approximately the same in Lower Kartli. On the Iori Plateau, the climate is more like a steppe: it is cooler in winter and hotter in summer.

The coldest region of Georgia is Bakuriani: in summer it never gets warmer than +15° C, in winter - up to -7° C. Thanks to this, this area is a favorite holiday destination for ski lovers.

In short, the climate in Georgia is different both horizontally and vertically. When going on vacation to the mainland, be sure to pay attention to this feature.

In water

On the Black Sea coast of Georgia, of course, it is not as warm as in the popular Russian tourists Egypt, but still in winter the temperature usually does not cross zero. Thus, in the Colchis Lowland in January it is usually from +4° C to +7° C, in summer - from +22° C to +23° C.

For this reason, plants bloom here almost all year round, trees bear fruit, and the beach season practically never stops. However, sometimes there are sudden cold spells, accompanied by frosts and snowfalls, which, of course, does not have the best effect on the condition of lemon and orange trees and other heat-loving vegetation.

Unlike the mainland, the coast is usually not swelteringly hot even in midsummer, thanks to sea breezes that keep the air from getting too warm.

If we talk about the water temperature, it is highest in August (+27° C), the sea is a couple of degrees colder in July and September, in early summer and mid-autumn it is also quite possible to swim (the water is warmed up to +21-22° C, but by December it gradually drops (to +13° C).

The coldest sea is usually in March (+9°C), a little warmer, oddly enough, in February. In January and April, the sea is not yet conducive to swimming (+11° C), but in November and May, people with a healthy heart and good blood vessels can already refresh themselves. With an air temperature of +24° C and a water temperature of +16° C, this is a good opportunity to have fun!

Despite the fact that, as was said, the Black Sea off the coast of Georgia retains heat for quite a long time, the best months July and August are traditionally considered for beach holidays. However, prices for housing and food at this time are the highest, so you should think carefully about what time to choose for swimming.

Beaches of the Black Sea coast

Beach holidays in Georgia have been and remain the most popular among the many tourists visiting this country. This is greatly facilitated by her geographical location, because the total length of the state’s sea coast is no less than 308 kilometers!

It is quite clear that over such a length there is a huge variety of resorts. It is simply impossible to talk about everyone in one article about Georgia, so we will name only the most popular places suitable for those who want to relax at sea.

In first place, of course, is Batumi. This is the most popular Georgian Black Sea resort, which is especially good because there is a large international Airport, and, accordingly, you can get directly to the sea without unnecessary tedious transfers.

The local beach is called “Batumi Beach”. The infrastructure here is well developed, it is always crowded, there is where to spend time and what to see. In addition to the sea, the city has a botanical garden, a summer theater, and a dolphinarium. History buffs should explore the remains of the ancient Tamara fortress: it was from this building that the history of the city began. We will not single out this monument in the category of attractions: it’s definitely not worth going to Batumi specifically for this, but if you are already here, be sure to go.

It is much more interesting, from our point of view, to choose another resort - Kabuleti; for this you will need to travel only a couple of tens of kilometers from Batumi. But there is a magnificent pine forest here, which means the air is amazingly clean and healing. By the way, this resort perfectly allows you to combine business with pleasure: go to the beach and treat the liver, kidneys, heart and blood vessels, as well as the respiratory system.

Another option for a seaside holiday is Cape Verde (aka Mtsvane-Kontskhi). There are not many people here, very beautiful nature and a great place for diving enthusiasts. In addition, at this resort you can find accommodation right on the territory of the botanical garden. Mtsvane-Kontskhi is one of the most scenic spots in Georgia, at least in its coastal part.

Kvariati - this resort is located almost at the very border with Turkey and is famous for its long and wide beaches, as well as crystal clear water. Good housing here costs about half as much as in crowded Batumi, and lovers budget holiday They can easily choose an economy option for literally pennies. Another reason to come here concerns scuba diving enthusiasts. The sea here is quite deep, and divers simply adore it.

There is another one near the Turkish border of Georgia beach resort- Sapi. But this beach, as they say, is not for everyone. Firstly, it is quite crowded here, and secondly, there is a busy highway nearby. But the sea here is incomparably cleaner than in Batumi.

The name “Georgia,” according to some sources, comes from the word “gorg” or “gurj”: this is how the ancient Persians and Arabs called the wolf, respectively, “Gurjistan”, or “Gurjan”, or “Gorgon”, means “country of wolves”. Some authors believe that this name is not connected with the animal itself, but with the fact that Georgia at that time was the most terrible enemy of Persia, and the name simply expresses the attitude of the Persians towards the people who were warlike towards them.

Active recreation for tourists

Thanks to the presence of mountains, Sakartvelo has all the conditions for lovers of active recreation, extreme sports and adrenaline. In summer it is tourism and mountaineering, in winter it is also ski slopes. It is not for nothing that Georgia is called a small country with great opportunities.

In summer

Amateur mountain hikes numerous travel companies Georgia offers a huge number of routes of varying difficulty and duration.

For example, from June to September you can do:

  • various hikes in Svaneti, they usually last about a week, belong to the second category of difficulty, their length is from 45 to 75 km;
  • inspection of the waterfalls of Megrelia and Lake Tobavarchkhili (second category of difficulty, about 10 days, total path about 70 km);
  • an easier hike from Khevsureti to Tusheti in 9 days;
  • climbing Kazbek is for the bravest.

During such hikes, tourists will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the proud ancient people of the Svans, admire the greatness of Kazbek and the beauty of the Abudelaur lakes, see with their own eyes the diverse flora and fauna of Georgia, and also go through a huge number of different passes.

The Caucasus Mountains are high and treacherous. They do not forgive mistakes and self-confidence. Even if you consider yourself an experienced hiker, you should not try to conquer local peaks without an experienced guide or at least serious training.

But after overcoming a difficult route, you will experience incomparable pleasure, test yourself and your friends, and be sure to come back. After all, as Vladimir Vysotsky sang, “down below, no matter how hard you reach, in your entire happy life you will not find a tenth of such beauties and wonders!”

in winter

Autumn and spring are much less suitable for such tourism than summer, because at this time it is windy in the mountains, it often rains and even sleet. As for winter, this is the period to conquer mountain peaks Only very experienced climbers with serious equipment can afford to choose.

For everyone else, Georgia has been offering an amazing ski holiday since December. The most popular among such resorts are Gudauri and Bakuriani. If we compare them with each other, it must be said that the first is more modern and European, while the second has a Soviet-style “flavor”.

As for the difficulty of the trails, in Gudauri they are longer, but the slopes are gentler. For those vacationing with children, tour operators usually recommend Bakuriani.

In addition to prepared slopes, Georgian ski resorts allow fans of freeriding to indulge their souls, and also provide other types of extreme recreation - snowboarding, gliding, helicopter jumps into virgin snow and much, much more.

The infrastructure here is well developed, housing can be chosen to suit every taste, and the surrounding nature simply cannot be described!

Excursions and attractions

There is something to see in Georgia both in winter and summer. There is no point in listing all the local attractions, but there are things that cannot be ignored, especially if you are somewhere nearby.

Must see

As we have already said, tourists visiting Georgia usually stop in Tbilisi, Batumi or Kutaisi (planes from all over the world fly to these cities). Therefore, we will consider the main attractions of these cities and their surroundings.

Tbilisi. Here, first of all, you need to explore the Old Town. The area is called “Kala” and consists exclusively of historical buildings; there are no modern ones here. Those who wish will be able to see the palace of Queen Darejan, the remains of the old fortress wall, the Narikala fortress, located on Mount David, and the Juma mosque.

The famous sulfur baths are also located here. Children (and their parents) will certainly be interested in visiting the Rezo Gabriadze Puppet Theater, as well as the zoo and botanical garden.

If you are staying in Batumi, in addition to the Old Town with its many churches of different faiths, you will certainly be impressed by the modern city. Here is the House of Justice, notable for the fact that its building looks like an inverted bottle, “Ali and Nino” - a moving sculpture of love, as well as the Monument to the Georgian Alphabet, which is original in its design.

Tired of a tiring walk, tourists can sit in one of the cozy restaurants on Piazza, feeling like they are in sunny Italy. Lovers of quiet relaxation and unusual vegetation should definitely set aside a day for a walk through the local botanical garden.

In Kutaisi, of course, you need to visit the Bagrati Temple, as well as, if the opportunity arises, the Geguti Palace and the residence of King Okros Chardahi.

Another city that is worthy of the attention of lovers of antiquity is Mtskheta. Here is the Ananuri fortress, the Jvari and Samtavro monasteries, the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, as well as many other interesting things.

Georgia for believers

Georgia is a Christian country, and it adopted this faith in 337, that is, six hundred and fifty years earlier than Kievan Rus!

Georgia is considered the record holder for the number of apostles whose foot set foot on its soil. She is said to have been visited by Simon, Matthew, and also St. Andrew the First-Called, the latter replacing the holy Virgin Mary, who had intended but for some reason could not come.

If Rus' was baptized by the great Vladimir, and Princess Olga was the first to accept the religion, then in Georgia this holy role was taken on by Saint Nino from Cappadocia, who, by the way, is related to Saint George himself. It is not surprising that this ancient Christian land has many places that are places of pilgrimage for believers from all over the world.

Thus, in the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God (Zion Church, or Temple of Sioni) there is an ancient relic - the Cross of St. Nino.

The above-mentioned Svetiskhoveli Temple in Mtskheta is a repository of several shrines at once - the Robe of the Lord, the shroud of the prophet Elijah, abrasions of the Life-Giving Pillar, the relics of Eustathius Placidus, the holy martyr. Here, not far from the monasteries, is the grave of another great Georgian saint, Elder Gabriel, who is credited with miraculous properties and is also a place of pilgrimage.

In Kakheti there is another ancient shrine - the Alaverdi Cathedral, or, as it is also called, the Cathedral of St. George, an ancient structure that was destroyed and restored many times. The Kakheti kings are buried nearby.

Holy places in Kutaisi are the monasteries of Motsameta and Gelati, the latter is considered the largest monastery in Georgia during the Middle Ages, it is under UNESCO protection.

In addition to those mentioned, it is worth mentioning another monastery, founded in the 13th century and still operating today. It is located in the mountainous region of Samtskhe-Javakheti, near the city of Akhaltsikhe. In this monastery (Safar Monastery) today two dozen monks live and run their household.

Nightlife in the land of hot bloods

Having enjoyed spiritual food, you can return to mortal life. Moreover, Georgians know how to not only pray, but also have fun.

In Tbilisi, one of the most popular night spots is the Night Fligh club. It is located on the right bank of the Mtkvari River, directly under the Baratashvili Bridge. The establishment has only one drawback - it is closed on weekdays.

Great to take a walk and enjoy at the same time national cuisine and local wine can be enjoyed at the Two Side club in Vatny Ryad. Opening time is 17:00, the program lasts until five in the morning.

You can warm yourself up not only with wine, but also with excellent chacha in the “Bottle Shock” wine bar, but this establishment is more suitable for those who prefer a less noisy holiday or just want to spend a pleasant evening in the company of friends.

Other large cities in the country also have their own nightlife establishments - you can easily find them by their bright signs and noisy music coming from inside.

Food, car and housing rental

Georgians are very hospitable people, so this is a real paradise for tourists.

Hotels

Let’s make a reservation right away - the “all inclusive” system is present in Georgia, but mainly only on the coast, mainly in Batumi. For those who are used to vacationing in Turkey in this way, it is worth saying that they may be somewhat disappointed.

It is difficult to surpass the Turkish scope in the choice of dishes and drinks. And besides, the local cuisine is so tasty and varied that exchanging it for senseless gorging on an impersonal buffet is simply a crime. Therefore, our advice: choose a hotel with breakfast or, in extreme cases, half board (breakfast + dinner). You definitely won’t remain hungry throughout the day!

Further, Georgians are not inclined to deceive their tourists, so three stars is a completely acceptable option for a holiday on the principle of “modestly, but tastefully.” However, if your budget allows, you will be happy to be offered a higher level of comfort. You should definitely pay attention to the proximity to the city center or the sea (depending on the type of holiday), the presence of noise (many tourists complain that it is too active night life and busy transport interchanges do not give them rest) and, of course, availability (popular hotels need to be booked in advance).

In addition to hotels, in Georgia you can stay in one of the many hostels or so-called “guesthouses” (something like the private sector in our understanding).

A very cheap option is camping.

Georgian cuisine and restaurants

It’s difficult to write about Georgian cuisine; you have to try it. The highlight of the country is that here you will not only be fed deliciously, but also loved, accompanying your meal with numerous stories and legends about your beloved land.

Contrary to the misconception that we have formed largely thanks to inept cooks trying to imitate Georgians, Caucasian cuisine is not spicy (unlike Thai or Indian). She's spicy, it's completely different!

Georgia is usually associated with lamb kebab, and you should definitely try this meat. But if you are not going to spend many days here, be sure to try something more original, because barbecue, even lamb, will not surprise anyone for a long time.

Let's not talk about khinkali and Adjarian-style khachapuri - everyone knows these dishes too (although few people ate them truly cooked, but at least there is no need to explain anything here).

In addition to the well-known kharcho (by the way, order it at a local restaurant, you will be very surprised at the difference), Georgian cuisine has another delicious soup - chikhirtma. If yesterday ended with too much alcohol for you, this morning this thick chicken soup with cornmeal, generously seasoned with herbs, is exactly what you need!

Mtsvadi - authentic Georgian shish kebab made from beef tenderloin. Instead of bread, take shoti, a long flatbread, the baking of which is an unforgettable spectacle in itself, or achma, a traditional layer cake with cheese.

If you don't want meat, take ajapsandali. This is a vegetable stew that is eaten with bread and washed down with wine.

As an aperitif, try pkhali, there are a lot of variations of this snack, and some of the local cheeses, and for dessert - the famous churchkhela.

And of course, Georgia is about wine. “Kindzmarauli”, “Saperavi”, “Alazani Valley”, “Mukuzani”, “Khvanchkara” - these names are real music for connoisseurs of the ancient and noble drink made from grape berries. The best local wines are semi-sweet and dry reds, but there are also very interesting whites (“Rkatsiteli”, “Tsinandali”, the same “Alazani Valley”).

There are no bad Georgian wines. Try anything and fall in love with this country again. And for lovers of strong drinks - excellent grape chacha!

Car rental and transport

When renting a car in Georgia, think about your route in advance. If you're serious about exploring the country, you'll probably need an SUV so you can easily get off the highway and navigate narrow mountain roads.

Tourists recommend renting a car on the spot rather than booking it in advance via the Internet: it will be much cheaper. But before you make a choice, study the offers, because for the same money in one case you will be offered an almost new car, in others - a completely “killed” one.

To get an idea of the price, let's say that the rental cost per day for a passenger car of a popular Japanese brand starts from $35, for a good jeep the price starts from $50. Well, it’s clear - the longer the rental period, the lower the cost per day.

In general, there are no problems with car rental in Georgia; this service is quite well developed here, and the mentality of the local population, as was said, is not fraudulent.

If you don’t know how to drive a car, don’t have a license, or are afraid to get involved with renting a car, you can always travel around the whole country using the services of an understandable and familiar to us minibus. There are a great many of them here, and sometimes there is real competition for clients among the “marshrutki” operators. For the same reason, such a service can sometimes be a little intrusive; tourists even joke about this, saying that in Georgia you don’t need to look for a taxi, here a taxi will always find you. But the prices are quite affordable, and you don’t have to wait long for transport, so you can travel this way.

There is another version: Georgia comes from the Russian word “cargo” (burden), and the name symbolizes the difficult role that God assigned to the Georgian Orthodox people in the fight against infidels in the Middle East and Asia Minor. The origin of the name "Georgia" ("Georgia") is also questionable. According to one version, it is associated with the Greek “geo” - “earth”, according to another - with Saint George, whom Georgians considered their main defender in the struggle for Christian values.

Shopping in Georgia

People rarely go to Georgia for shopping; this country is valued for completely different things. In order to preserve a piece of this hospitable and colorful country in their souls, tourists first of all buy local wine, cheeses and spices, adjika and tkemali, various sweets, as well as ceramics, national daggers, shawls and other exotic items. In addition, Georgia is famous for its good leather shoes, and especially rabid shopaholics can buy a magnificent handmade carpet here.

You can export no more than three liters of alcohol from Georgia for each adult tourist. You can grab two more liters by paying an additional fee. But it is not recommended to take homemade chacha with you - it may be confiscated during customs inspection.

For local flavor, we recommend going to the market near the Dry Bridge in Tbilisi, not far from Shota Rustaveli Avenue. This is a huge flea market where you can spend half a day and not notice how time has passed. It’s also worth visiting one of the many local bazaars - not even to buy something, but to get intoxicated by the unique aroma of fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs that abound in the local cuisine!

And in conclusion - if you don’t know where to spend your next vacation, want to see something new and unusual, but don’t want to waste time on hours-long flights to distant exotic countries, give yourself a gift - go on a trip to such a close but at the same time absolutely original Georgia. We promise you will truly fall in love with this amazing country and will only regret one thing: that your tour ended so quickly.

Georgia is a country where everything seems to be specially created for relaxation and treatment, where all nature is a shining example of harmony, endless diversity and rare beauty.

Georgia is famous for its various resorts - balneological, mountain climatic and therapeutic mud. Mild climate, clean air, abundance thermal springs and deposits of healing mud, as well as the beaches of the Black Sea coast - make Georgia a country for every taste. These places attract with the healing properties of the mountain and sea climate, the abundance of sun, and the richest mineral springs, which makes it possible to successfully treat many diseases.

The coastal part of Adjara is a favorite destination for tourists arriving in Georgia and is distinguished by its diverse resort areas.

Batumi

Batumi is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Black Sea coast. This is a city at the crossroads of times and religions, in the contrast of modern and ancient architecture.
Batumi Boulevard is the most important attraction of the city. Construction of the boulevard began in 1881, when the governor of the Batumi region entrusted the construction of a park along the city embankment to German gardeners Ressler and Reyer.

Today the length of the boulevard has already reached 7 kilometers and is conditionally divided into “new” and “old”. But the unusually beautiful park is still there. In recent years it has been decorated modern sculptures, original benches and fountains.

The city is located in a subtropical climate. Every year thousands of tourists come here not only from Georgia itself, but also from all over the world. In 2012, the American Academy of Hospitality named Batumi the best tourist destination of the year.

In the second half of the 20th century, foreign European architects worked to give the city a modern look. The development of Batumi is closely connected with global economic and industrial development: it was during this period that the famous Nobel brothers and the Rothschild family began their food activities in Batumi.

Today Batumi is changing its appearance. New hotels, tourist and sports facilities are being built. A fashionable shopping center-gallery with swimming pools, a yacht club and attractions for children is being built. The city hosts many international festivals and events every year.

Batumi was first mentioned in the works of the Greek philosopher Aristotle in the 4th century BC, but archaeologists have found evidence that there were settlements on the site of modern Batumi back in the 1st-2nd millennium BC.

Cape Verde

One of the most beautiful seaside resorts in Georgia, Cape Verde or Mtsvane Kontskhi, is located just nine kilometers from Batumi. This is one of the most popular holiday destinations for both visitors and locals.

This place received the name Cape Verde because of its year-round green cover. The resort's climate is subtropical, with abundant heat and moisture, which encourages the growth of tropical plants. The total area of the garden is about 120 hectares, which contains a magnificent collection of 5 thousand species, of which almost half are tree and shrub species. Only 104 of them can be found in the Caucasus. In one territory they coexist perfectly: blue eucalyptus and Japanese sakura, cactus plantations and a bamboo grove, palm trees and giant spruce trees.

Hot summers promote sunbathing, as well as the treatment of respiratory diseases.

The improvement of this place began at the end of the 19th century. On the beautiful slopes of Cape Verde, the Batumi Botanical Garden of world significance was laid out, which annually welcomes thousands of vacationers and guests.

The coastal strip of Cape Verde is incredibly picturesque. The fine-pebble beaches are always full of vacationers, including lovers of active recreation (diving and windsurfing). Wild rocky beaches are open for extreme sports enthusiasts.

Kobuleti

Kobuleti is a real pearl of Adjara. The resort is located in the Colchis lowland and differs from other seaside resorts in the region with its special microclimate. People come here to sunbathe on a clean pebble beach, breathe in the fresh sea air, admire the magnificent views, and, of course, treat their health.

The resort area of Kobuleti, located 20 kilometers from Batumi, stretches for more than 10 kilometers along the coast. The resort is characterized by a mild subtropical climate, ionized air, pine forests, hot sun and warm sea, which is recommended for both relaxation and treatment.

As throughout Georgia, the beaches here are municipal, and therefore clean and well-groomed. Small pebbles and clear seas give you the pleasure of a beach holiday with the unique natural healing properties of black magnetic sands.

Today in Kobuleti such a method of treatment as thalassotherapy or treatment by the sea and sea air is very widely used. Scientists have found that sea water, compared to fresh water, increases the metabolic function of the skin by more than 25%.

Chakvi

Chakvi is a small resort, completely surrounded by greenery, located on the Black Sea coast of Adjara, 17 kilometers from Batumi. In Chakvi the beach is pebble, only at the very edge of the water there is sand, mainly made up of small shells and pebbles.

The name of the resort is associated with tea. Tea culture has been developed here since ancient times, and therefore the resort is called the capital of Georgian tea. In Chakvi you can see huge tea plantations, which are spread over a fairly large area. In addition, here you can admire plantations of Japanese tangerines and bamboo.

Gonio

In Gonio, in addition to the clear sea and mountain slopes, tourists and vacationers are attracted by the eucalyptus grove located along the road and endowing vacationers with a healing aroma that brings health benefits. The beach is large pebbles, like everywhere else in the vicinity of Batumi.

In addition, vacationers in Gonio, which is located 11 kilometers from Batumi, are attracted by the ruins of an ancient fortress of the same name.

Gonio Fortress (or Gonio-Apsaros Fortress) is the most old fortress in Georgia. The history of the fortress goes back several thousand years. The oldest archaeological layers excavated by archaeologists on the territory of the fortress date back to the 15th-17th centuries BC. There is a legend that the name Apsaros comes from the ancient Greek myth of the Argonauts. According to legend, it was in this place that the son of King Aeta, Apsyrtus, who was killed by Jason, was buried.

There are many legends and myths associated with the fortress. On the territory of the fortress there is a grave, which today is considered to be the grave of the Apostle Matthew - one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, whom the Savior accepted into his circle instead of Judas Iscariot.

According to one version, the Apostle Matthew, after the death of Christ, came to the Gonio fortress and stayed here to preach. The tomb of the Apostle Matthew is located on the territory of the Roman praetorium (from Latin literally “the commander’s tent”).

Based on the enormous historical and cultural significance of the Gonio fortress, the Georgian government declared it a museum-reserve in 1994.

Kvariati

Kvariati is one of the most popular resorts on the Black Sea coast, which has an excellent location, combining mountain air with sea air. A distinctive feature of the resort is crystal clear sea water, thanks to which many vacationers and also business people come here.

Kvariati is located 14 kilometers south of Batumi, not far from the Georgian-Turkish border. The beach is pebble and clean, one kilometer long. Kvariati earned its popularity due to its deep water and attractive underwater world, which is ideal for diving.

That is why at the beginning of the beach, almost at the very rocks, there is the only diving center in Georgia, where you can get training, dive with a mask and fins, and try diving of various types, including on sunken ships.

In addition to relaxation and entertainment, together with other Black Sea resorts in Adjara, it is recommended for the treatment of the vascular-central nervous system and gynecological diseases.

By the river

Ureki is one of the most popular seaside climatic resorts, located in the Ozurgeti region (Western Georgia) 50 kilometers from Batumi. The proximity of the warm Black Sea contributes to the formation of a humid subtropical climate in the Ureki area.

The coast of Ureki is a strip of pine and eucalyptus forests, which, combined with sea air, fills everything around with a very special intoxicating aroma.

The rich gifts of nature - the sea, the sun, fine velvety sand with magnetic properties - make the Ureki resort a unique place for active recreation and treatment.

Unlike other Black Sea resorts, there are sandy beaches here. And not simple ones - fine-grained sand is enriched with magnetite, which is called “magnetic sand”. People come here to improve their health - doctors claim that Ureki magnetic sands help with diseases of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system.

The healing properties of the magnetic field have been known since ancient times. They were used for treatment by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Indian yogis. In modern medicine, the magnetic field is widely used as a physiotherapeutic method called magnetotherapy.

The main reserves of such sand on the Black Sea coast are Bulgaria and Georgia. Georgian sands contain 2-3% magnetite, but in some cases the content can reach 70% - in small layers in the upper layers. Bulgarian magnetic sand placers are wider than Georgian ones, but the maximum magnetite content in them is significantly lower. Black magnetic sands on the beaches of Georgia are a rare and unique phenomenon.

Grigoleti

Grigoleti is one of the most famous Georgian Black Sea resorts located in the southwestern part of the Colchis lowland. On one side, Grigoleti is washed by the waters of the Black Sea, and on the other, it is decorated with mountains.

Most of the coast is covered with pine forest. Grigoleti beach consists of magnetic sand, especially useful for joint and rheumatic diseases. Also on the territory of the resort is Lake Grigoleti.

According to legend, the Golden Fleece was kept here and the beautiful Medea lived.

Georgia. Anaklia

Spanish architect Alberto Domingo was invited to build the resort. He changed the geometry of the coastal strip, designed a new embankment, laid out big park with attractions and built the longest pedestrian bridge in Europe (540 meters), which connects the resort with the village of Ganmukhuri, located on the other side of the Enguri River.

At the moment, the coast is being built up with modern hotels and tourist sites. A deep-sea port and a Free Industrial Zone will be built in Anaklia, which will contribute to the development of the region and, accordingly, tourism infrastructure and the growth of tourists.

Holidays in Georgia are incredibly diverse: the sea, mountains, historical and cultural monuments, delicious local cuisine, Georgian hospitality and much, much more that will surely leave you with vivid emotions and memories.

Holidays in Georgia by the sea

Georgia, although a small country, is incredibly diverse, because in just a few hours you can get from the zone of alpine meadows and snow to the tropics.

From the west, the country is washed by the Black Sea, and the length of the coastline is more than 110 km. You have a wide choice of where to relax on the beach: the main Georgian resort of Batumi, the border town of Sarpi, the city of Kobuleti, resort villages Kvariati, Gonio, Makhinjauri, Chakvi, Ureki.

How to get there?

Now there are many options to get to the coast of Georgia: you can fly directly from Russia, sail on a comet from Sochi, or go through Tbilisi or Kutaisi. Direct flights from Russia to Batumi will cost no less than 15,000 rubles round trip, but if you fly to Tbilisi and from there by train/minibus, you can get it at half the price.

We are already traditionally looking for tickets for our trips to.

Specific prices and tips on how to save in these posts:

How to choose where to stay for a seaside holiday in Georgia?

  • If the main thing is entertainment and well-established infrastructure, you should definitely choose Kobuleti.
  • From Batumi it is convenient to make forays to.
  • If a sandy beach comes first, then I recommend taking a closer look at black sand beaches.
  • The cleanest and most transparent water in the village is a fact, but it has its drawbacks, see the link for more details.
  • Behind relaxing holiday go, for example, to Tsikhisdziri or Chakvi.
  • Poti is not suitable for a seaside holiday - it is an international port and the water is dirty.

Prices for accommodation by the sea in Georgia

You can live in a hotel, guesthouse, and in Batumi there are also regular hostels. Accommodation prices start from 15-20 lari (340-450 rubles) per bed and from 35-40 lari (800-900 rubles) for a simple room for two in a guest house. Naturally, the closer to the sea, the higher the prices and vice versa. It’s convenient to search for daily housing on , which compares the prices of several booking systems at once.

If you value the comfort of home, I recommend renting an apartment from the owners - it’s more convenient and cheaper for the family and big company. Spacious apartments in the center of Batumi will cost from $30-40 per day (1700-2300 rubles), a studio closer to the outskirts can be rented for $20-25 (1100-1400 rubles). Look for options on Airbnb (go to and get $25 as a gift for your first booking).

We have a couple of useful articles about renting housing in Batumi:

I found the cheapest car rental in Georgia on , they cooperate with local offices and the reviews are good.

Also at your service are the ubiquitous minibuses, which unfortunately cannot be reached in all remote corners, and trains running along the main line from Tbilisi to Batumi with branches.

To order a taxi from the airport to the city online via the Internet, I recommend a proven service. You will be greeted with a sign with your name and quickly taken to your desired location.

If you need to improve your health, then Georgia also has something to offer - the famous one, where you can drink mineral water in any quantity in the local park. In addition, it’s cool to walk around the area in the national park. Borjomi-Kharagauli park, where you can rent a tent or spend the night in ranger houses.
