When visiting Haiphong for the first time, everyone will pay attention to the buildings from the French colonial era, Haiphong Opera, Our Lady's Cathedral, Nghe Temple, Du Hang and Thule Pagodas. All of the listed attractions are recommended for visiting, because this is the unique architecture of the city, classical and restrained; in fact, nothing extraordinary or out of the ordinary can be found in the city.

The Naval Museum and the City Museum will be of interest to those who want to learn more about Haiphong's past. Museums will tell you about traditional tools, local culture and the difficult period of struggle against invaders.

History of Haiphong

According to legend, Haiphong was founded by a female general, Le Chan, who fought against the Chinese occupation, in 43 AD. The name of the settlement was not chosen by chance and was translated as “defense from the sea.” From those distant times, historical monuments and statues of the founder can still be found in the vicinity of the city.

But when exactly the history of Haiphong as an industrial and developed city begins, no one can say for sure. However, its famous port had existed for several centuries by the time the French troops arrived. Thus, the modern city was a small fishing point and a center of market trade.

Promising sea routes were very attractive to foreign invaders and were one of their main goals in conquering Vietnam.

Haiphong became one of the most important strongholds of Vietnam and one of the French bases in the Pacific Ocean during colonial times, at which time the first European neighborhoods appeared in it.

The First Indochina War did not bypass the city, and in 1946 a French cruiser fired at some city blocks from 8-inch guns. According to the French, soldiers of the enemy army could have been deliberately hidden in Haiphong. The shelling killed approximately five thousand innocent local residents.

This was one of the first such bloody wars for the city. But already during the American War it was bombed again. The thing is that military aid ships from the allied USSR and China passed through the city port. This greatly irritated the American authorities. It got to the point that President Nixon, wanting to destroy a major Vietnamese port, ordered the sea routes to be mined, but a year later the Paris Peace Agreement entrusted the United States with the responsibility to clear them.

The rapid restoration of the city began. The construction of new ships and the modernization of old shipyards developed at a rapid pace.

The renewed city began to attract those who wanted a beautiful and free life, in exchange for a monotonous socialist existence. This factor further pushed the city towards the development and construction of beaches, entertainment centers and the first casino. Largely due to these relatively recent events, we can see modern Haiphong in all its beauty.

The name of the city, located in the northern part of the Red River Delta, translates as “defense from the sea.” This indicates the importance that the ancient rulers of the country attached to the harbor. However, by the time French troops appeared in Tonkin, Haiphong was just a small fishing port and market center for the surrounding counties. In 1874, when colonialists appeared in this area, the town became one of their first strongholds in the conquest of North Vietnam. Very soon the city acquired a European quarter. In the 20th century Haiphong was one of the main French naval bases in the Pacific until it fell into Japanese hands. In 1946, it was here that the fighting of the First Indochina War began. The French heavy cruiser Suffren bombarded the "yellow" areas of Haiphong with 8-inch guns. The bombing, which killed an estimated two to six thousand civilians, was a reaction of the French command to the alleged concentration of Viet Minh fighters in the city.

During the American War, a continuous flow of military aid from the friendly USSR and China passed through the port of Haiphong. Soviet ships sailed to Haiphong from Vladivostok and Nakhodka, often enduring serious danger during American air raids. In May 1972, President Richard Nixon ordered the approaches to the harbor to be mined. A year later, American minesweepers had to do the exact opposite: the Paris Peace Agreement obliged the United States to clear sea routes of mines.

At the end of the 1970s. The surroundings of Haiphong, like a magnet, attracted those wishing to exchange a dull socialist existence for a free bourgeois life: Hong Kong, located nearby, became the main target of the “boat people” who fled the country. In the early 1990s. the not very attractive local beaches gave rise to the first timid shoots of the current resort industry. In 1993, a significant event occurred: the first casino in the history of Vietnam opened near Haiphong.

Location and transportation

Haiphong is located 105 km from the capital of Vietnam and is connected with it by Expressway No. 5. The main streets of the city, located on the southern bank of the Cuacam River (Cua Cam), have traditional names for Vietnam: Bach Dang (Bach Dang), Dien Bien Phu (Dien Bien Phu), Hung Vuong (Hung Vuong), Le Loy (Le Loi) and so on. The main highways of Haiphong run from the west and southwest to the east and northeast. The old districts are adjacent to the river, and the French Quarter is located some distance from the water - along Dien Bien Phu and Tran Phu streets (Tran Phu) and Quang Trung (Quang Trung).

Binh Pier (Ben Binh) located in the very center of the city. From here, passenger ships regularly depart to the island. Cat Ba, Ha Long City and Mong Kai, located on the Chinese border. "Comet" sails to Mongkai daily from Monday to Thursday at 7.30 (fare 230,000 VND). From Niem Nghia pier (Ben Niem Nghia) Ships depart for the cities of the Red River Delta - Nam Dinh and Hai Duong.

Catbi Airport is a 20-minute drive from the city center. (Cat Bi).

Regular buses from Hanoi (2 hours on the way) arrive in Haiphong at two bus stations: Tam Bak (Ben He Tat Vas) and Laclong (Ben Xe Lac Long). Most buses go to Tam Bak, however, if you do not intend to stay in Haiphong and plan to go straight to Cat Ba Island, it will be more convenient to get to La Long. Buses to Halong City depart from the same station.

Attractions

The road from Hanoi to Haiphong passes through the small town of Con Son (Con son). Here you can make a short stop and look into the temple dedicated to the highly revered poet and commander Nguyen Chai in Vietnam (1380-1442) - participant in the resistance to the Chinese invaders at the beginning of the 15th century. and classics of national literature. Conchon is the birthplace of this hero. Temple (entrance - 3000 dong) stands on top of a high hill and is a place of pilgrimage for the Vietnamese, who are not afraid of the grueling climb up the steep stairs. Not only ordinary people seek to visit this sacred place - on February 15, 1965, at the very beginning of the American War, Ho Chi Minh visited the temple, demonstrating the determination of the Vietnamese to resist aggression. A few kilometers from the city is Kjepbak (Den Kiep Bac)- the family temple of the family of General Tran Hung Dao, who lived a hundred years earlier than Nguyen Chai and became famous for his victories over hordes of Mongols. This temple complex arose at the beginning of the 14th century. and is available for inspection for 2000 VND.

Having reached Haiphong, you can start exploring it with a walk through the colonial part of the city, and then visit several temples and the Vietnamese Naval Museum. In the western part of the city, on the spit of the Tambak River (Tam Back) and Khali channel (On Ly), you will see the bus station and the Sat market (Cho Sat). Quang Trung Street starts from here (Quang Trung St.)- part of the boulevard that crosses the entire city and ends in the north of Haiphong at the intersection with Dien Bien Phu Street. The Haiphong Opera building is located on Quang Trung. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century, but its external decoration cannot be compared with the magnificent facade of the Hanoi Opera. However, the Haiphong theater boasts good interior decoration.

From the theater you can walk in a northeast direction to the intersection of the boulevard with Hoang Van Thu Street (Hoang Van Thu St.), where the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is located - the main Catholic church of the city. The cathedral was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1904. On the way to it you will come across a monument to the national hero of Vietnam Ngo Quyen (897 - 944) , who in 938 ended thousands of years of Chinese rule in Vietnam by defeating the occupying forces in the first Battle of the Bat Dang River. South of the monument (about 200 m) there is another monument to the courage of Vietnamese patriots. This is Nghe Temple (Nghe), dedicated to Le Chan, an ancient heroine who became a general in the liberation army during the uprising of the Trung sisters in the 1st century AD. The warrior came from the village of An Bien, which was once located on the site of modern Haiphong. For a long time the sanctuary was a simple small rural temple, but in 1919 - 1926. it was expanded and decorated with stone sculpture. In the main hall of the temple you can see a statue of Le Chan, dressed in rich clothes.

After visiting the cathedral, you can take Hoang Van Thy Street north to Dien Bien Phu Street, where the city museum with a very small exhibition is housed in a beautiful colonial-era building (Free admission). The Naval Museum is located nearby (8.00-11.00, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Admission 10,000 dong), from which you should also not expect anything extraordinary. If time permits, you can visit the Hang Ken Community House (Hang Kenh), located in the Lechan district (Le Chan) in the southern part of the city. The building was built in 1717 and significantly expanded in 1905. The community house is richly decorated with wooden sculptures (more than 150 sculptures), among which there is a very revered image of the hero Ngo Quyen, already known to us. Next door to Hang Ken is the beautiful Zi Hang Pagoda (Chua Du Hang, 121, Du Hang St.), founded more than 300 years ago. In 1899, the pagoda was expanded and a belfry was added to it.

All of the described attractions in the Lechan district are located less than 1 km south of the central boulevard and are open to the public every day.

As winter approaches, Haiphong becomes colder. During the day the thermometer stays around +20…21°C, and at night the temperature drops to +15°C. But there is still little rainfall. And if you want to relax during this time, all you need to do is warm yourself. Walking around the city, sightseeing and even taking excursions on boats on the sea is quite possible.
