Chang Island map

Koh Chang, whose image resembles the outline of an elephant's head with a trunk, is becoming an increasingly popular tropical holiday destination among tourists around the world. Most of it belongs to the national park, so the influx of tourists here is naturally limited, and you can forget about the bustle of “experienced” resorts, such as Phuket and Samui. This island is the ideal solution for the best holiday in a picturesque and serene place. A Koh Chang Thailand hotel map is also available for free at most hotels, travel agencies or cafes. Using it you can find any hotel or guesthouse on any beach on the island. You can find Koh Chang hotels on the map below.

▣ Ko Chang Island is the second largest island in Thailand.

Koh Chang is a true paradise for those who are truly passionate about wildlife. The island's territory is surrounded by massive mountain ranges and is about 215 km², which is the third largest among all similar islands in Thailand, after Phuket and Koh Samui.

It also belongs to the Mu Koh Chang National Marine Sanctuary. There are many different parks here, carefully protected by the state.

Koh Chang Island on the map of Thailand

The island is located about 300 kilometers from Bangkok and not far from the eastern province of Trat. The literal translation from the local language means "Elephant Island".

It received this name due to the image on the map, the outlines of which resemble the silhouette of an elephant. Near Chang there are about 50 more exotic islands for relaxation. The most popular: and Koh Mak.

Currently, the island is home to about five thousand inhabitants. Their main activities are growing fruits and fishing. The local people are hospitable and friendly, so you will feel at home here.

The construction of bars, hotels and other entertainment venues is not as rapid as in other areas. This is due to the fact that the island is still the most valuable national park. You won't have much fun here; this place is suitable mainly for a quiet family holiday. There are no crowds of drunken vacationers and girls of easy virtue here. Hotel room prices are quite cheap.

Prices here are slightly lower than in more popular resorts in Thailand. This is an absolute plus, but depending on the level of establishments and the range of products offered, you will have to spend money.

The maximum that can please nightlife lovers is several bars and venues where discos and various events are held. Vacationers will also be interested in: elephant rides through the jungle, diving, fire shows, and fishing. You can also go on a short trip to the neighboring islands.

How to get there

There are three ways to get to Koh Chang - by plane, by bus and by taxi to the city of Trat. First of all, you need to understand that Koh Chang is an island, which means any type of travel includes a ferry. The main ferry piers are Center Point Pier and Koh Chang Ferry Pier.

▣ Ferry to Koh Chang.

Ferries from Koh Chang Ferry Pier regularly depart from the pier and sail for half an hour, and from Center Point Ferry Pier about an hour. They run from 6 am to 7 pm. Cost, 80 baht per passenger one way, or 120 for a round trip ticket.

Koh Chang piers map

By plane

There is no airport on Koh Chang; the nearest one is in Trat. There is only one airline operating flights there - Bangkok Air. Airfare from 3000 baht, travel time 1 hour. You can check the schedule on their website and book tickets there. Flights operate three times a day - at 8:40, 10:30 and 17:05. After this, you need to catch a minibus and go to the pier. Cost - 100 baht.

By bus

From Ekamai Bus Terminal (Bangkok East Station) or Mo Chit Bus Terminal (Bangkok North Station). The buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and make stops along the way, arriving at the Trat Bus Terminal or directly to the pier. Buses go to Trat every half hour, from 6 am to 11 pm. From Trat to the pier you can take a songthaew, the cost is 50-100 baht. Travel time is 30 minutes.

Taxi

You can use a taxi, the cost will be 3500-4500 baht from the airport. If you have already reached the city, then you can try to catch it by hand and bargain. In this case, the trip will cost about 2 thousand baht. If you are going on vacation with a large group, then the best choice would be to rent a minibus. By the way, this is a very good option, because for just a modest four hundred baht per person it will take you to your destination.

There are no sea connections between Koh Chang and other resorts in Thailand.

Transport

Public transport is problematic here. Therefore, you will have only two ways to move. The first is to rent a bike or car, the second is to travel by songthaew.

Renting a bike will cost you 150-300 baht per day, if you rent for a long time, the price will be 3000-3500 baht per month. Helmet included. In the case of long-term rentals, it is recommended to bargain with the owners. It's the same with renting a car. Price per day from 1100 to 2000 baht. To rent, you will need a passport (or at least a copy of it) - it is advisable to leave a cash deposit to avoid unpleasant circumstances.

▣ Bike rental.

If you don’t want to deal with renting a vehicle, then songthaew is the best option. Always agree on the price with the driver in advance and negotiate. On average, the cost of a trip for two people is 100 baht. The peculiarity of this type of transport is that in the morning and late in the evening rental prices rise significantly. Therefore, it is better to use it during the day.

The beaches of the island are distinguished by the fact that they are located at a fairly large distance from each other and it will be quite difficult to reach on foot. Therefore, it is best to use the services of a Songthaew taxi.

There is actually another option - hiking around Koh Chang.

Attractions

Upon arrival in Thailand on Koh Chang Island, the first thing you should do is make a plan for excursions so that you can not only relax on a sunny beach, but also take beautiful photos against the backdrop of local attractions. You should definitely visit the Klong Phlu Waterfall, which is located near Klong Prao Beach. Very convenient for swimming. The depth in one of its bowls reaches 7 meters.

▣ Klong Plu Waterfall

Than Mayom is a waterfall that forms a beautiful pool with four cascades. It is noteworthy that you can pitch a tent or set up a campsite nearby.

There are quite a few other waterfalls here that are worth seeing. These reservoirs include: Kiri Pet, Nang Yom and Khlong Nung.

Since they are also part of a national reserve, they can only be visited if you purchase a ticket costing 200 baht.

If you love scenic spots, then Klong Son will not leave you indifferent. This bay offers stunning views that you can admire for hours and take amazing photos. It is no secret that local residents mainly fish. If you want to observe how this happens and plunge into the daily life of the Thais, you can go to fishing villages, for example, Rong Than and Salak Pet, Bang Bao.

The most famous village in Thailand is Bang Bao. It differs in that the bungalows of local residents are located directly in the sea on special stages. This is where fish is caught and processed. By the way, in fishing villages you can visit branded restaurants where they cook local food, learn about the traditions and mentality of the local residents, and also find out what they do.

In Ko Chang you can get an unforgettable experience by riding elephants. We also recommend visiting the monkey school and seeing how they were tamed. The school is called Koh Chang Monkey School. It is located on White Sand Beach. The show lasts for an hour.

However, the most memorable entertainment is Flight of the Gibbon. This attraction will give tourists a huge amount of adrenaline and unreal drive. Here you will travel through the jungle using ropes for several hours.

Religion on Koh Chang is an important part of the culture. Chao Po is the main shrine, which means "Holy Father of Koh Chang". Residents firmly believe that if you constantly pray to the Father, a real miracle can happen.

▣ Chao Po shrine on Koh Chang island.

A special monument for local residents is the memorial to the heroes of the naval battle. It became famous because at the beginning of the twentieth century, during the battle between the Thais and the French, a ship of the local fleet was wrecked here.

▣ Bang Bao lighthouse on Koh Chang island.

As you can see, there are no special attractions, with the exception of several waterfalls, ancient temples and the above-mentioned entertainment. However, stunningly picturesque places will completely replace the lack of large excursion programs.

Beaches

The most popular place is White Sand Beach. There are a huge number of restaurants, bars, various shops and massage parlors here. Lonely Beach is an ideal place for photos, as the snow-white sand blends harmoniously with the rocky landscapes.

There are open-air parties here almost every night. Of course, the level of such events is very mediocre, but enough people gather. One of the advantages of beaches is that even in the most popular places you can find a secluded place where you can take a walk.

The authorities take extremely serious care of the island's ecology. Therefore, the water and the shore are always perfectly clean. Moreover, maintaining such a state is the responsibility of not only residents, but also visitors.

You can also relax on the beaches located in the western part of the coast, such as: Hat Sai Khao, Bang Bao, Klong Son, Klong.

Weather

The weather on Koh Chang is not always pleasant for vacationers. Due to monsoon winds, rainy weather sets in from June to October, so the best period will be from November to May. During this period, the weather is always sunny and the temperature is about 30 degrees. The rainiest month is August. Almost all resorts accept vacationers all year round, but there are exceptions.

Housing

On Chang, you can live as you please, from inexpensive bungalows to modern luxury homes on the ocean. Most hotels are located in close proximity to the beaches, and the cost directly depends on its location and level of accommodation. If you want a more relaxing and secluded holiday, you can rent a bungalow.

Housing prices start from 150 baht. By the way, for 300-450 baht you can find a decent bungalow with all amenities. House or guest house - prices average 700-900 baht per night. Hotel room average 2500 baht.

▣ Cozy bungalows on the beach.

The most popular hotel is the KC Grande Resort & Spa. This hotel provides tourists with all the conditions for a comfortable stay and even more. Free wifi and parking, swimming pool, fitness, spa treatments and much more.

Villa Plounge Pool is also distinguished by its hospitality and high level of service. The hotel database provides a wide choice to its customers.

is considered no less attractive and paradise for tourists than the advertised Phuket. The island is located in the Pacific Ocean, or rather, in the eastern part of the Gulf of Thailand. "Elephant Island" (ko – island, chang – Thai) slightly smaller than Phuket. Its tourist infrastructure can already compete with its “big brother”, but the development of the resort area of Koh Chang began relatively recently.

Natural resources almost untouched by human hands can be called the highlight of the resort. 80% of the island of Koh Chang is still covered in jungle, and some beaches on the ocean coast remain “wild” and belong to protected natural areas. And only 20% of the area is being actively developed by hotels, restaurants, health and entertainment centers.

A little south of the island of Koh Chang is located exactly the same popular, but with less developed infrastructure,.

At night, Koh Chang becomes quiet. The regulars are hardly used to such calm. Only a small number of discos and nightclubs does not make the island a resort for retirees (read more about life). There are many bars here where you can successfully meet a pretty Thai girl and invite her to your room. Locals say that vacationers alone on the beach have the greatest chance of not falling asleep. White Sand Beach, but if you have arrived, it is still better to go to more luscious resorts. Moreover, Koh Chang is not the cheapest place in Thailand; there are noticeably more comfortable apartments here than modest bungalows.

Advice! You can plan your vacation by contacting the Satang company! Russian guys who have been living and working on Koh Chang since 2010 are real experts on the island and the entire archipelago. It is often convenient to completely think through your vacation in advance: book a hotel or villa, schedule a route and all transfers, choose interesting excursions. Satang.ru contains all the information about the island of Koh Chang. If you want to choose a house for yourself, or it is important for you to know all the details in advance, you can contact Igor (who is the permanent director and ideological inspirer of the company) and choose the best option. Moreover, with the guys you can organize a tropical wedding or go to conquer the Kingdom of Cambodia. The company's employees will always answer your questions and help with advice; you can call or write to a messenger convenient for you. The prices are more than reasonable, and often cheaper than in Thai kiosks. The Satang.ru office is located on Chaichet beach, opposite the Coconut beach resort hotel, if you’re somewhere nearby, be sure to stop by and say hello!

How to get to Koh Chang island

Options how to get to Koh Chang island A little. There is no airport on the island, but people travel here from Bangkok and Pattaya. The bus ride is only 5 hours. It’s even faster to fly from Bangkok by domestic flight to the city of Trat, from where again by bus, and then you’ll have to transfer to the ferry (by the way, the article ““ describes in detail the entire process of booking this type of transport).

The eastern part of the island is not inhabited, and even in the north, tourists will hardly be able to find anything interesting among several coastal fishing villages.

Transport system

Even for drivers with many years of experience, it is better to arrange holiday on Koh Chang island without your own car. The road, which runs through almost the entire perimeter, is completely covered with dangerous slopes; only local residents can stay on it. Fortunately, the resort has no problems with public transport. Buses run between settlements, the fare of which ranges from 50-120 baht.

A selection of the best hotels on Koh Chang

Below is a selection of the cheapest, most expensive and popular hotels on the island that can be booked on websites or - these are convenient and popular services for finding hotels all over the world, including in Thailand.

Climate

Weather on Koh Chang island It’s quite predictable and sudden temperature changes don’t happen often here. There are two seasons in this climate zone: rainy and dry. In, which lasts from June to October, the temperature stays at +30 - +35 degrees. The dry season is no cooler, but precipitation is rare from November to April, which makes the heat of +30 degrees much more noticeable. To find out what the weather is like on the island today, use our informer.

Koh Chang island is ideal for a beach holiday. Just for the sake of beautiful beaches , warm sea with clear water, almost untouched jungle, tourists come to Koh Chang. What is the best beach on Koh Chang? Which beach to choose for a family holiday, and which for youth? This article is about all the beaches of Koh Chang, our review and reviews. And if you are also considering the island of Koh Samui for a beach holiday, then I advise you to read and then compare which island is best for you for your vacation.

There are ten main beaches on Koh Chang:

and several small beaches and coves. All main beaches (except Long Beach) are located on west coast islands, but the eastern part of Koh Chang is not suitable for swimming. The coast there looks almost everywhere like in the photo below:

Sketch map of Koh Chang island

Let's start the review with the beaches of the west coast. From the ferry crossing, which can be reached from the mainland (read my article), we move counterclockwise from north to south.

White Sand Beach

White Sand Beach- the most famous, noisiest, most popular beach on Koh Chang island. This is where tour operators send our tourists on vacation. It was on White Sand Beach that we saw the most inscriptions and signs in Russian (but don’t be afraid, there are not as many of them there as in or in :)).

White Sand Beach is located closest to all other beaches to the ferry crossing; you can get to it in just 15-20 minutes and 50 baht.

The beach is long, but the sand, despite the name, is not completely white. In any case, not as white as on the Gili Islands in Indonesia or on Na.

White Sand is divided into two parts: northern and southern. There is a road along the southern part, and there are many expensive hotels near the sea. But the northern part of the beach can only be reached on foot. And the hotels here are simpler, the atmosphere is more youthful.

Hotels and guesthouses are located both on the shore and in the jungle inland. On White Sand Beach you can find accommodation to suit every taste and budget.

The infrastructure on White Sand Beach is well developed - here you will find everything you need for a holiday and even for a long stay.

Shops, cafes, bars, karaoke, shops with cheap food, night discos - all this is present in sufficient quantities on White Sand Beach.

The beach is ideal for those who like to be in the center of events and for those who like fun and parties. And White Sand is often chosen as a place to live by long-livers of the island because of its good (by island standards) infrastructure. More details here:

South of White Sand Beach is marked on the map Pearl Beach, but the coast in this part of Koh Chang is rocky, so Pearl Beach is not at all suitable for a beach holiday (unless you prefer to swim in the pools rather than in the sea).

Chai Chet Beach

Chai Chet Beach – a small cozy beach in the bay. The beach belongs to hotels, which carefully monitor the order on the beach, remove garbage and clean the sand. But anyone can come to sunbathe on the beach, the main thing is not to occupy the hotel sun loungers and swings :)

The sand on the beach is fine, the entrance to the sea is gentle. Chai Chet Beach is ideal for families with children.

Klong Prao Beach

Klong Prao Beach– a long beach of almost 3 kilometers. The beach strip is separated from the main road by a coconut forest, so when choosing Klong Prao for a vacation, you need to understand that you will either have to be content with the hotel infrastructure, or rent a bike; without a bike, I wouldn’t be very comfortable there. Due to the distance from noisy restaurants and bars (only hotel restaurants are on the beach), Klong Prao beach is always quiet and peaceful.

The sea is shallow and the tides are very noticeable. Palm trees and conifers grow almost out of the water :)

There are many expensive hotels on Klong Prao Beach that are ideal for a romantic getaway or a holiday with children. According to the majority of tourists who visited Koh Chang, Klong Prao is the most beautiful beach on the island (we have a different opinion 🙂).

There are also cheap hotels on Klong Prao, such as Tiger Hut. But it seems to me that a stay in such a hotel is not for everyone :) Read more here:

Kai Bae Beach

We follow further to the south of Koh Chang and get to Kai Bay beach. Kai Bay is such a golden mean between the noisy White Sand and the quiet Klong Prao. The main island road runs along the beach, where shops, cafes, and restaurants are concentrated.

The beach itself is rocky in the north and sandy in the south. We found Kai Bay beach in not the best light due to bad weather and strong tide (or is it low tide?). In fact, in good weather everything is much better here :)

Kai Bay beach in bad weather

There are many Russian speakers on Kai Bay beach, especially many families with small children. Kai Bei ends.

Lonely Beach

Beyond the difficult serpentine and mountain pass after Kai Bei begins beach Longley Beach. The jungle and mountains in this part of the island are almost close to the coastline and beach. Monkeys walk along the road, you can hear the chirping of birds and the sound of a real tropical forest. This is how Longley Beach welcomes tourists.

Despite its name (“Lonely”), Lonely Beach is no longer deserted as it was many years ago. There are, of course, much fewer people here than on the above beaches, especially in its northernmost part.

The sand on the beach is fine, but not quite like flour, but coarser. Smooth entry into the sea, the ebb and flow of the tides are almost not felt. I recommend staying at a hotel on Lonely Beach.

Right (north) side of Longley Beach

The southern part of Lonley Beach is rocky. A little further south begins the village of Lonley Beach itself with all its tourist infrastructure. You can also find inexpensive housing here. For example, we lived in a nice little house for several days. Houses are also available for long-term rent.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to swim in the sea in this part of the beach. But you can catch fish :)

The southern part of Longley Beach is chosen by young people and backpackers from all over the world. It is on Longley Beach that there are the most young foreigners.

Longley Beach is our favorite beach on Koh Chang. There is some special atmosphere of love, calmness and happiness here, which is difficult to convey in words.

Balian Bay Beach

Balian Bay Beach is located further south after Lonley Beach. It is not very popular among tourists due to its undeveloped infrastructure (no shops, cafes). The northern part of the beach is rocky, but the southern part is very nice.

Southern part of Balian Bay beach

Nearby is the Top Tree Adventure park (I talked a little about it in the review article about Koh Chang).

Bang Bao

Bang Bao this is a fishing village (very, very touristy), entirely consisting of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops along a long pier. There is no beach here, you can swim right from the porch of the hotel house :)

The fishing village of Bang Bao

But if before reaching Bang Bao you turn right onto the cape, you will end up on a small beach. From a distance it even looks nice, but up close it doesn’t look so good, although you can swim.

The beach is before reaching Bang Bao. This is what it looks like from the pier
and here it is close up :)

Detailed article with photos:

Kong Koi Beach

Kong Koi is a very pretty beach with coarse sand and azure water. There are quite a lot of people at the beginning of the beach, near the road. But if we walk further along the beach, we will find completely deserted places.

Part of Kong Koi Beach is closer to the road
Completely empty beach!

Kong Koi is a very beautiful beach, although the infrastructure here is not very developed, but there are cafes and accommodation. You will have to go to the neighboring village to go to the shops.

Grand Lagoona Beach Hotel

Entry to beach of the Grand Laguna hotel it will be a little further if you take the road from Kong Koi Beach. There is a fee to enter the hotel premises.

The beach is located on the territory of the hotel, which is made in the shape of a ship. The beach is almost empty! There is a swimming pool. The sea water is clean and clear, and the sand is dazzling. Just a picture of Bounty. I recommend!

Magnificent Grand Laguna Beach!

Long Beach

Long Beach it can be said to be the only beach suitable for swimming on the east coast of Koh Chang. The road to it is difficult.

The beach itself, in our opinion, is not worth the effort that is required to get to Long Beach. and decide for yourself whether to go there or not.

Long Beach

On the way to Long Beach, we stopped at another small beach with a single hotel.

Hotels on the beaches of Koh Chang
