When is the best time to go to Jurmala by the sea? Beaches of Riga and Jurmala. Resort area for children and adults

Jurmala is the largest resort in the Baltic states, located on the shores of the Gulf of Riga and stretching along the coast for 30 km. It consists of 15 villages, the most famous of which are Bulduri, Majori, Dubulti, Dzintari, Jomas, Vaivari and Jaunkemeri. Since its founding, Jurmala, without any exaggeration, was considered the best resort on the Riga seaside and received the richest Lithuanian nobles, the highest military echelon and representatives of bohemia. Today it has become much more accessible, but has not lost its charm at all.

Jurmala is unique due to the combination of three recreation areas - sea, forest and cultural. Those who are attracted by the mild climate, healing sea air, and a combination of ample opportunities for restoring health with a lot of entertainment relax here.

How to get to Jurmala

The easiest and most convenient way to Jurmala lies through Riga (read how to get there). The resort is located just 20 km from the international airport, which receives daily flights from many cities in Russia and Europe. Trains, buses and taxis run from the Latvian capital to the coast.

Suburban trains of the Latvian Railways depart from the Riga-Passenger railway station to Jurmala 1-3 times an hour (office site). The city stretches along the coast, and the train makes 10-12 stops there. The first platform is called “Priedaine”, the last one is “Sloka”, the station is in the historical center near the main attractions - “Majori”. Trains run from 6:00 to 23:30, a ticket costs 1.05-1.40 EUR (more expensive during rush hour and high season), the journey takes about half an hour. Prices on the page are as of October 2018.

Buses No. 22 and minibuses No. 222 and 241 run between the airport and the railway station. They depart every 10-30 minutes from parking lot P1 opposite the airport. The fare is 2 EUR or 1.15 EUR (if you buy a ticket in advance at the information desk, press kiosks or vending machines).

Buses and minibuses of the Nordeka (office site.) and Talsu Autotransports companies depart from the Riga-Passenger station and the bus station from 7:30 to 21:00. During the season they go very often, you can easily find a seat and pay for the fare when boarding. The journey takes about 30 minutes, the fare costs 1.50-2 EUR.

Near the airport there is a parking lot for the official taxi companies Baltic Taxi Lidosta and RedCab (office site). A trip to the center of Jurmala will take approximately 20 minutes and cost 15 EUR.

Districts of Jurmala

Jurmala not so long ago became an entire resort city. Once upon a time it was a chain of villages stretching along the coast, and even earlier - fishing villages. Then they turned into districts, each with its own history and atmosphere.

The most active tourist life is in full swing in Maiori. This part of the resort attracts guests with ancient buildings, restaurants, shops and souvenir shops on Jomas Street. In neighboring Dzintari there is a concert hall of the same name, where significant musical events take place, and previously the KVN summer festival, which moved to Svetlogorsk. It is also worth visiting for the wooden buildings from the beginning of the last century. And in the Bulduri area there are historical quarters built in the Art Nouveau style popular in Europe.

Most hotels are concentrated in Maiori, but prices are quite high. You should look for cheaper housing away from the center.

In the areas of Priedaine in the east of the city and Kemeri in the west, you can relax calmly and profitably in the fresh air. In the first there is the natural monument White Dune, which offers views of the Lielupe River, in the second there is a national park and several balneological sanatoriums. You can also get treatment in Jaunkemeri, Vaivari and Pumpuri, which are remote from the center.

Fans of active recreation and tourists with children should pay attention to the areas of Asari and Lielupe. The first has a large recreation park - rides, rental of sports equipment and other entertainment. In the second there is a water park and yacht clubs, where you can rent a boat, yacht or water skis.

Transport

One of the main types of public transport in Jurmala is trains from Riga. They run frequently, go through the entire resort and stop in almost every area. The fare costs 0.80-1.50 EUR. You can also get around the city by minibuses and buses. There are 8 regular routes on the schedule (another one is launched in the summer), but they cover all areas of the city. Transport runs from 5:30-6:30 to 20:00-23:30; during the season, additional late flights are added on some routes; one trip will cost 0.70-1.40 EUR.

Private taxi services have been completely eradicated in the country; all taxis are official.

There are several taxi companies operating at the resort, but the prices are practically the same. The fare consists of tariffs for landing (2 EUR) and each km (0.64 EUR). Payment is strictly according to the meter, but it is better to check with the driver the amount before the trip. You can catch a car on the street or call by phone. In the first case, the taxi driver may try to inflate the price; in the second, no additional payments are provided.

Almost all historical areas, parks and natural recreation areas in Jurmala are equipped with bicycle paths. It’s not difficult to find a rental point; there are many offices in the city, including the international NextBike. Rental cost is 2-3 EUR per hour and about 10 EUR per day.

Communications and Wi-Fi

In Jurmala, it is worth buying a local SIM card - communication with Russian companies will cost more. There are 3 main Latvian cellular companies operating here - LMT, Tele 2 and Bite. The first has excellent coverage, but communication is expensive, so tourists usually choose from the last two. On Tele 2, the cheapest SIM card costs 6 EUR, a minute of conversation with Russia costs 0.56 EUR. The tariff includes unlimited calls and SMS within Latvia and 100 MB of Internet. When you sign up for a prepaid tariff plan Bite 1 (2 EUR per month), you can call home for 0.29 EUR per minute, send an SMS for 0.07 EUR.

Packages are sold in mobile operator stores and other retail outlets. No documents are required to connect.

There will be no problems with access to the Internet - there are many free access points installed here - in Bulduri, Majori, Dubulti, Dzintari and Sloka. You need to find Lattelecom in the list of available networks and watch a small advertisement in your browser. Internet at good speed will be available within 30 minutes. To extend the session by half an hour, you will have to watch another commercial.

Beaches of Jurmala

It is comfortable to sunbathe and swim in almost every district of Jurmala. The beaches in Majori, Dzintari, Bulduri and Jaunkemeri periodically receive the Blue Flag, confirming their cleanliness and safety. The shore is covered with fine white sand, and garbage is removed every day. The water is clean and clear, but much cooler than in the southern seas. It’s convenient and safe to relax with children - the entrance to the water is very smooth; to get to a decent depth, you need to walk for about 5 minutes. The entire coastline is equipped with changing cabins, showers and toilets, and benches are installed here and there. There are many parking lots along the beach area, and wooden paths for bicycles and wheelchairs lead to the sea.

There are no paid beaches at the resort; rental of umbrellas and sun loungers costs 5-7 EUR.

The nature of recreation differs in different areas. The coastline in Maiori is always crowded, noisy and fun. For those who want to kick the ball, football goals have been installed, and there are rental shops for sports equipment. Those who want to sunbathe in silence should choose the beaches of Dubulti, Bulduri or Jaunkemeri. The latter has a well-developed sports infrastructure - pedal boats, motorcycles and other equipment are available for rent. Those who kite and windsurf or want to try their hand at these sports should check out the coastline in Pupuri. You can play beach volleyball in almost every area, but you will have to take care of the net yourself.

The resort has not only sea beaches. There are several yacht clubs on the Lielupe River, and rental of yachts, water skis and other equipment is available.

Treatment

Jurmala attracts vacationers with its healing climate, mineral springs and good sanatoriums. Now there are not as many health resorts here as in Soviet times, but the air is still saturated with phytoncides and iodine. Water of varying composition and degree of mineralization is obtained from local sources. In addition to mineral water, hydrogen sulfide water is used here, as well as peat and sapropel mud.

Prices in wellness centers are moderate - a double room costs from 90 EUR per night. This amount includes accommodation, three meals a day and a whole range of procedures.

Among the diseases for which treatment in Jurmala sanatoriums is indicated are diseases of the kidneys, heart, nervous system, respiratory system, metabolic disorders and others. Depending on the diagnosis, the patient is prescribed special nutrition and procedures - hydrogen sulfide and pearl baths, massage, mud therapy, lymphatic drainage, paraffin therapy. Some health resorts have their own mineral springs right on the premises. The most famous sanatoriums of Jurmala - "Amber Coast" and "Jaunkemeri" - are located in the Kemeri National Park.

Jurmala Hotels

The choice of accommodation options in Jurmala is large - resort hotels, spa centers, boutique hotels, hostels, apartments and even mobile homes. The latter are perfect for budget-conscious tourists - prices per day start from 25 EUR. The cost generally depends on the area and proximity to the sea. The most expensive hotels are located in Majori and Dzintari on the first coastline - up to 900 EUR for two per night. On the outskirts you can find a hotel near the coast for 30-60 EUR.

Cottages and villas for 4-6 people are widespread at the resort. The price range is large - 50-1000 EUR per day.

There are not many “star” hotels here. Only 4 hotels have 3*, a night in a double room costs 70-90 EUR. You can stay in one of the 8 “fours” for 60-160 EUR per day. Prices for a double room in 5* hotels start from 150 EUR. Most upscale hotels include breakfast in the price. For those who prefer to cook on their own, there is a large selection of apartments with a kitchen.

Cuisine and restaurants of Jurmala

The national cuisine of Latvia is simple and satisfying. Cabbage, potatoes, beans and gray peas are used in everyday dishes. The latter, cooked with smoked meats, is also served at Christmas. In Latvian restaurants in Jurmala you can try this dish at any time of the year. The most popular meat is pork - it is used to make jellied meat, bake it, and add it to vegetable dishes and soups. Fish occupies an important place in the national cuisine, and thanks to its location on the Baltic coast, the choice of fish delicacies here is very large. You should definitely try “silkyu pudiņš” - herring casserole with potatoes. Of the desserts, the most famous is “bouberte” with semolina, whipped cream and cranberry sauce.

Latvian cuisine is famous for soups made from quite unexpected ingredients and their combinations - beer, bread with dried fruit or whipped cream and others.

There are many catering establishments at the resort - coffee shops, pizzerias, sushi bars, cafes and restaurants of different cuisines of the world. There is also the notorious fast food - the best option for budget tourists - a snack for one will cost 2-4 EUR. Breakfast in a modest cafe will cost 15-20 EUR for two. You can dine in middle-class restaurants for 40-80 EUR. The most expensive fashionable establishments are concentrated on the street. Jomas, the average bill for dinner for two persons can reach up to 150 EUR.

Entertainment and attractions

Jurmala has several areas with interesting buildings from an architectural point of view. In Dzintari there are many wooden buildings from the early 19th century, built in Art Nouveau, Neo-Gothic and Romanticism - with turrets, balconies, openwork carvings and other decor. The most famous of them is the holiday complex of Kristaps and Augusta Morberg - a blue castle made of wood and metal. Now it belongs to the University of Latvia, and excursions are conducted around the territory and the adjacent garden of rare plants. It is also worth visiting central Maiori for the beautiful architecture.

Those who want to get acquainted with the history of the resort should look into the Jurmala City Museum. There are practically no antiquities or archaeological finds there, but there is a large collection of antique ladies' swimwear. Among the exhibits are also objects recovered from the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The exhibition “Ships in the Deep” is dedicated to sunken merchant and military ships and the history of Latvian shipping.

The Jurmala Open Air Museum contains many items from fishermen's everyday life. Entire houses and huts from all over the country were brought here. Their walls are covered with nets, hooks and other gear. Also here you can see fishing boats, smokehouses, anchors and much more. There is practically no props here - all things were used for their intended purpose, and the buildings were transported entirely. It is better to come here with a group excursion - in addition to viewing the exhibits, you will be able to learn how to tie sea knots and mend nets, and at the end - try smoked fish with beer and listen to folk songs.

The exhibition at the Yantarny Bereg health resort is dedicated to the history of sanatorium-resort treatment in Jurmala. It displays photographs, documents and antique medical equipment.

Near the Gulf of Riga in the Kemeri region there is a national park of the same name. Tourists are attracted here by the unique nature - swamps, sand dunes, river and sea coast get along well with each other. There are several routes throughout the territory, you can walk along the lake or swamps, watch birds, ride a canoe or take a sulfur bath.

Jurmala for children

The resort is great for families with children. In addition to beaches, museums and architecture, there are several interesting parks where young travelers will definitely not get bored.

In the center of Jurmala there is the largest water park in Northern Europe - “Livu” (office site). The attractions are located in a three-story building and operate around the clock. The territory is divided into 4 zones, which house more than 40 slides - from the smallest to the extreme. Kids will enjoy frolicking in the Captain Kid's Island play complex with ladders, fountains and water cannons. For adults there are wave pools, a “running river”, jacuzzi, saunas and other relaxation.

Fans of active recreation should go to the Dzintari forest park. There are rope routes stretched between the pine trees. This kind of entertainment is more suitable for older children - you need to climb to a great height and move from one tree to another along swinging logs and thin ropes. For kids there are playgrounds with swings and carousels.

December

The climate of Jurmala smoothly transitions from maritime to continental. Summer is warm and mild, there is no extreme heat, and the water may even seem cool compared to the southern seas. The short beach season begins in mid-June and ends in the second half of August. It often rains at the beginning and end of summer.

In early autumn and late spring the weather is good. Although swimming is not yet allowed, tourists come here to admire nature and enjoy the peace and quiet. There are few people at this time, and prices are lower than in high season. Winter lasts from mid-November to March, with severe frosts and snowfalls.

A person may know absolutely nothing about Latvia: neither that its capital is Riga, nor that Raymond Pauls was born there, and may even confuse it with Lithuania (shameful, but it happens). But when the cherished word “Jurmala” is uttered in front of our man, a red exclamation mark immediately lights up in his head. Because everyone really knows Jurmala - both as the venue for the most popular music competition, and as the largest resort in the Baltic countries. Riga seaside - is it really necessary to describe these words in any special way?

Tourism and resort holidays in Latvia are a fundamental source of national income, much like metal music in Finland. And Jurmala plays a major role in this. This is not even a resort - it is a whole network of resorts and beaches, a huge complex, which provides everything that the most demanding tourist might need (well, except for outright exoticism - you still have to go to another country for elephants and fried grasshoppers).

When is the best time to go to Jurmala? It would seem - in the summer, at the height of the swimming season. But here we need to take into account some important nuances. Let's start with the fact that the Riga seaside is not limited to resorts alone. Remember that same Soviet music festival? So, these were only flowers.

The famous Jurmala concert hall “Dzintari” is known far beyond the borders of Riga, and the number of events held there makes you whistle respectfully. This is the “Voting KiViN”, and the “Comedy Club” festival, and the “New Wave” competition, and “Jurmalina”... These are only the most famous events. For a number of reasons, they are held almost simultaneously: from approximately mid-July to mid-August. Do not forget to book hotels in Jurmala in advance, at this time they are not only overcrowded - in principle, there may not be any available rooms.

So here you have to make a difficult choice: on the one hand, all the delights of the high season, on the other - the human sea, “Russian tourist face of morality” and packed hotels that need to be stormed, like the fortress of Minas Tirith, and just as unsuccessfully. If you purposefully go to the same “KiViN”, then, of course, you will have to come to terms with it. But if you like a more relaxing holiday, then it’s better to go to Jurmala at another time.
For example, in the second half of August. At this time, the flow of tourists is already beginning to dry up, and the sea (quite cold) is already warming up so much that it is quite possible to swim in it comfortably. And the mild August weather in Jurmala is just the thing for people who cannot tolerate, for example, the Egyptian heat.

This year, as in previous years, at the beginning of August I went to Jurmala to create a small summer sea holiday for myself on the shores of the Baltic Sea.

What is it, Jurmala. First of all, it is a city with a population of 56,060 people, along which a magnificent sandy beach with a length of 26 km lies along the shore of the Baltic Sea.

The oldest district of Jurmala, Sloka began to develop already in the 17th century. Well, the first vacationers in modern Jurmala, the Courland landowners, appeared at the end of the 18th century and this gives the right to consider the Jurmala resort one of the oldest seaside resorts in Europe.

Modern Jurmala includes the city's regional beaches: Kemeri, Jaunkemeri, Kaugurciems, Kauguri, Vaivari, Asari, Melluzi, Pumpuri, Jaundubulti, Dubulti, Majori, Dzintari, Bulduri, Lielupe and Bulluciems.

Jurmala is unique due to the combination of three recreation areas - sea, forest and cultural. Those who are attracted by the mild climate, healing sea air, and a combination of ample opportunities for restoring health with a lot of entertainment relax here.

Over the past 22 years I have visited 24 countries Europe and Asia, I have been to the resorts of Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Cyprus, Greece, Italy... I have been to the Baltic, Mediterranean, Aegean, Adriatic and Ionian seas... and I can proudly say that today, Jurmala is worth it to me at the first place.

Jurmala is perfect for those who want to improve their health, in particular to solve problems related to the respiratory system and the musculoskeletal system. It will be extremely useful to visit such sanatoriums and health resorts as Jaunkameri and Kemeri. For decades now, they have been famous for their balneotherapeutic centers, where they conduct effective courses of treatment using herbal and mud baths, various wraps, as well as mineral waters with a high sulfur content. All this, combined with a favorable climate, sea air saturated with iodine and pine esters, invariably gives a positive effect.

Very close to these two health resort centers is the Kemeri National Nature Park, where a huge number of representatives of the flora and fauna of this region are collected - it will be pleasant to get to know them during leisurely walks along neat hiking trails or specialized thematic events organized by park enthusiasts. Activities include sport fishing and kayaking on the Lielupe River.

On the banks of the same river there is another park, Ragakapa, within which there is a rather unusual museum, all of its exhibits are in one way or another related to fishing. Here you can not only observe the process of smoking seafood, but also actually taste them. Along picturesque winding paths from here you can go down directly to the seashore.

Those who simply dream of spending their holidays in solitude, not without comfort, among centuries-old pines and juniper groves, on the amber Baltic coast, should definitely visit the resort villages of Asari and Melluzi. Here time slows down, and in a light sea breeze, along with notes of pine needles, it spreads harmony and peace throughout. You can spend hours wandering along the shore, feeling the soft velvet of sand under your bare feet, in search of magical amber, which brings incredible luck to everyone who finds it. This is an ideal place for a relaxing family holiday.

Well, if you are an avid lover of social entertainment and cannot imagine your vacation without expensive restaurants, brand boutiques and modern entertainment centers, you definitely need to come to Maiori. Walking along the local embankment - Jomas, full of chic and sparkle, will give you real pleasure. In addition, from here it is literally a stone's throw to the notorious Dzintari with its humorous festivals, song competitions and concerts of world-famous stars.

There is also a place in Jurmala intended for active recreation - Lielupe. All conditions have been created here for lovers of sailing on yachts, playing golf or tennis, and a grandiose water park is always welcome to visitors, where about one and a half thousand people can spend time without problems and have a lot of fun at the same time. It will be interesting for both married couples and noisy youth groups to come here.

At the same time, all these seemingly different centers are united by a special resort atmosphere of sophistication and at the same time warmth and comfort, leisurely tranquility and certainly a good mood. Jurmala is a city with its own bright and unique character, which has been formed over the centuries, and during all this time exceptionally good manners have been instilled in it.
Jurmala, the resort is not cheap. For example, rooms at the Ligt Houze hotel cost from 210 to 1800 euros per day, and Baltik Beach offers rooms from 90 to 1300 euros per night. However, there are cheaper hotels, for example “Dzintari” from 42 to 100 euros or “Jurmala from 24 euros and this is 100 meters from the sea in the Dzintari area. Moreover, places are reserved even in cheap hotels without problems and in some without prepayment .

Of course, in Jurmala there is a big difference in the prices of food, clothing, souvenirs with other cities of Latvia and the same Riga, in Jurmala everything is more expensive, but everywhere you can find, if you look, prices according to your capabilities. Of course, I don’t know if you can find a cap in Jurmala for less than 8-10 euros and swimming trunks for less than 20 euros, but for souvenirs among 10-15 stalls, there will definitely be one that will please you with the same product, 2-3 times cheaper. Just turn off the main street Jomas and you can immediately eat a first, second and sweet course, plus beer for 5-6 euros. Of course, in a “cool” street restaurant or on the sea coast in a tent, it will cost that price just to quench your thirst with beer. Another surprise is the cheap wine and vodka store in the center of Jurmala, beer and vodka not only without a markup, but also with “discounts”.

My vacation, I must say, was a success. It was hot outside +34, but the sea was less hospitable and the water temperature ranged from +8 to +11 degrees. The water in the sea depends on the direction of the wind. A week before my arrival it was from +24 to +27 degrees.
Honestly, at +15 I even swam in the lake, but at +8 I entered the water for the first time, but at the same time the feeling was wonderful, it’s somehow impossible to swim, but I want to plunge an infinite number of times before going to the hot shore. So cold water was not a problem.

Compared to previous years, the city of Jurmala itself somehow disappointed me. It seems that everyone is only interested in business and how you can extract money from a vacationer, but offer good service, is there a problem with this, or did I go to the wrong prices where they smile at you and offer you something.
I’m already silent about dirty streets, for example the same Dzintari Avenue. I will not describe the sidewalks there that have not been repaired since Soviet times. But it’s elementary, you can probably at least once a day wipe down a table in one of the cafes, on which yesterday’s sweets are sticking, which so strongly attract wasps, which bit several children while I tried to eat hodgepodge and at the same time use my cap to beat off the annoying wasps from the spoon. It is difficult to understand why the questions follow: “Do you need sour cream for pancakes?” If the menu says “Pancakes with sour cream”, it’s also advisable to remind them to put lemon and olives in the hodgepodge. This never happened before, it was cleaner and tastier.

Of course, hotels are being built everywhere near the sea coast. There is chic everywhere, but there is no shine. Here you can also tell how dirty children's diapers float on the waves near the shore... However, this is no longer Jurmala, but the culture of Jurmala guests.

However, what shines is Jomas Street at night. The street is pedestrian with numerous wooden houses that are already 100-115 years old, but they glow very beautifully when illuminated. Souvenir shops are open even at 23.00. There are more people on the street at night than during the day. I was even surprised there how many people in Latvia walk at night! True, the speech is more English, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, a lot of Lithuanian speech and of course Russian.

The fact that there are fewer vacationers from Russia, I’m afraid, is not true. My neighbors at the hotel were families from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov... One family from Moscow has been coming to Jurmala for 8 years, 2 times a year, in January and August. And the family is financially modest. However, this is understandable, because rich people are looking for other hotels. Somehow my hotel neighbors from Moscow were not happy with life in Russia. They said that Russia and Latvia have the same problems, only Latvia has already experienced the collapse and collapse of industry after the USSR, and Russia is now going through this path with job cuts, rising prices and low wages. Russians are shocked only by the prices for utility services in Latvia, to which they say “Oh yes, we heard about this back in Russia!” At the same time, Russians who want to vacation in Jurmala, according to the same Russians, do not have any problems with a visa to Latvia.
For us, this is a special topic, if you are a citizen of Latvia... But this is the topic of my future autumn notes about other cities and countries...

I noticed another nice thing. One evening a Vitas concert took place in the Dzintari Concert Hall. Tickets for concerts in Jurmala are very expensive. A lot of people listen and even look through the lattice fence while sitting on benches in the park, and of course there are many children crowding around the fence. The organizer of the concert came out and took all preschool and school-age children and their parents to the concert for free.

I remember one funny incident. Silence in the hotel. Arrival of a family from Belarus. Mom, dad and three boys. The youngest is 4-5 years old. The boy began to cry at 23.00 because he wanted to eat his own potatoes! The child’s father began to be indignant that there was no good food to eat in Latvia, saying it was good that they took potatoes with them. We went noisily to look for a stove and a saucepan. When everyone was already asleep, at about 1.00 a.m. the potatoes were cooked, which the father of the family announced to the entire floor of the hotel, “Son, come here, mommy cooked the bulba!” At that moment, the lights went out in the entire hotel! To be honest, at that time I was drinking beer in a stuffy hotel room, which I almost choked on from all this. The “mother” turned on something wrong in the kitchen and a short circuit occurred. We ate bulba until the morning with mobile phones illuminated!
It’s a pity that we had to leave in the morning, because the Belarusians’ vacation was just beginning!

I like Jurmala. I want to come there again and again, if only for the quiet evening sea sunsets. It's really very beautiful. You stand in the darkness of the night, and in front of you the water of the mirror-like surface of the sea plays with a magical shine, into which you can step with your feet. Somewhere in the distance calm music is playing. And you look at this beauty, feel the warm breath of the sea and say only one word “Latvia!” Without any politics or economics. Just "Latvia!" And you feel like a part of this beautiful Latvia, and this is not just Latvia, but My Latvia. A place of beautiful nature, dreams and relaxation. A place where people from all over the world come. A place where you can just walk, dissolving in the water, air and sun, forgetting about all your home and work problems.

Jurmala is, without a doubt, the most advertised and famous resort in Latvia. Like all seaside towns that are popular with tourists, it has grown along the coast of the Gulf of Riga for as much as thirty-two kilometers. So now it is quite possible to talk about “Greater Jurmala”, which includes the once separate villages: Kemeri, Dzintari, Bulduri, Lielupe, Majori, Jaundubulti and others. Life at the main Latvian resort is completely subject to the seasons. In summer it is crowded and noisy. And at other times the town freezes and finally begins to live “for itself”, and not for holidaymakers. But this does not mean that holidays in Jurmala are exclusively for summer. In this article we will tell you everything about the most famous. What is the climate there, how to get there, where to stay, where to eat and what to do - read below. We will also list prices in Jurmala. You can come to the resort in an organized manner by purchasing a tour package.

Where is Jurmala located and how to get there?

This town is located only twenty kilometers from the capital. Therefore, a holiday in Jurmala is also attractive because you can get here quickly and without problems. Air Baltic and Aeroflot planes make regular flights to Riga. From Moscow, St. Petersburg and other large cities in the western part of Russia, shuttle and tourist buses travel to the capital of Latvia. But you won’t be able to get directly from Riga airport to Jurmala. You will have to go to the railway station, from where trains depart quite often in the direction of Tukums or Sloka. Travel time is less than half an hour. The train makes stops in all satellite villages of Jurmala.

A minibus in the same direction departs from the main railway station. In summer there is a direct express bus from Riga Airport. The ticket costs three euros. The trip on the New Wave boat will be unforgettable. It departs from Riga Castle and arrives at the resort village of Majori. This route is the longest (two and a half hours), but very interesting.

There is an excellent road to Jurmala from Riga, and the journey by your own car will take about twenty minutes. Before entering the city you will have to pay a resort fee of two euros. But if you have booked a hotel or sanatorium, you do not need to purchase a pass.

Weather in Jurmala

The climate of the Baltic Sea coast is not pleasant with warmth. But it is quite small and warms up well. The holiday season in Jurmala is short. It officially opens at the end of May. And it ends already in mid-August, and if the weather in Jurmala allows, then at the end of the month.

It should be said that the most precipitation occurs at the beginning of autumn, which does not take long to arrive on the Riga seaside. But summer is really warm. The climate in Jurmala is suitable for those who cannot stand the heat. Even in July, the thermometer rarely rises to +28. Spring comes to Jurmala in mid-March. Winters here are very cold and windy.

When to go to Jurmala?

During high season (July) the resort is very crowded. Prices are rising, and crowds of people are walking along the streets. Travel agencies from all over Latvia send their tours to Jurmala: weekend, health, excursion (together with a tour of Riga) and so on. If you like a more or less secluded, relaxing holiday, avoid coming here in July. A noticeable decline in the number of holidaymakers is observed already in the first ten days of August. The last month of summer can bring unpleasant surprises with the weather, but it’s worth the risk. Jurmala delights with warm sea in August. And the average air temperature this month is twenty-one degrees.

August at the resort is eventful. Instead of Russian shows - KVN, "Jurmalina" and "New Wave", other concerts and festivals are held in Dzintari. In particular, the humorous program “Evening Kyiv” is on tour. In mid-August, the Summertime festival takes place in Jurmala. Since September, resort life in Jurmala has been slowly calming down. A short revival occurs only during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
